Ciudad de México Update:

The race for Mexico’s 2026 World Cup roster is tightening fast, and the number of open spots keeps shrinking. That means several players are likely to miss out on the tournament—and one of the names almost certainly staying off Javier “El Vasco” Aguirre’s list is Daniel Villaseca, the young Mexican midfielder currently playing for Tapatío.

Even though Aguirre hasn’t included him in his plans, Villaseca may still have a path to the World Cup—ironically, through two of Mexico’s Group A rivals.

Villaseca holds three nationalities:

  • Mexican through his father
  • Czech through his mother
  • And South African by birth—he was born in Gauteng

That means he’s eligible to represent three of the four national teams in Group A at the 2026 World Cup.

Villaseca didn’t develop in Mexico’s youth system. His early soccer career took shape in the Czech Republic, where he played for clubs like Dukla Prague B and FK Pšovka Mělník.

In 2022, Chivas spotted his potential and brought him to Mexico. Since then, he’s worked his way through the club’s U‑20 and U‑23 squads and now plays for Tapatío, continuing his rise within the organization.
