Manchester United’s retained list for 2023/24 does not include David De Gea, sparking speculation that the experienced goalkeeper may be on his way out of Old Trafford.

On Friday a statement from the club confirmed that the “retained list has been sent to the Premier League, ahead of the full announcement.”

The most notable absence from the retained list was De Gea, who is out of contract this summer. The club made reference to this fact in the announcement, saying:

“In terms of the goalkeeping department, discussions remain open with David De Gea over a potential new contract, while Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had extensions triggered on their deals.”

It is thought that Erik ten Hag is happy to keep De Gea at the club, but only on the condition that he accepts a less lucrative contract and that he will no longer be first choice. De Gea has often been Manchester United’s most consistent player during his decade at Old Trafford but has struggled to adapt to the ball-playing demands of Ten Hag’s style of football.

André Onana a target for Chelsea and Manchester United

Manchester United are not alone in their search for a new goalkeeper this summer and they are thought to be searching in a very similar pool as Premier League rivals Chelsea.

In recent seasons both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy have enjoyed spells as first choice, but new boss Mauricio Pochettino is expected to try to bring in his own man.

Both Chelsea and United are thought to be interested in Inter Milan keeper André Onana, who starred in his side’s run to the Champions League final. As well as being a top shot-stopper he is brilliant with the ball at his feet, as evidenced in the direct passing utilised by Inter against Manchester City.

Inter need to bring in funds this summer to rectify their financial struggles so he will likely be available for the right price. United will hope to have the edge due to Onana’s previous work with Ten Hag at Ajax.
