Update:

Fresh off winning the MLS Cup this past weekend, the future of Luis Suárez is once again up in the air. The Uruguayan striker’s time with Inter Miami could be nearing its end, with options ranging from a one-year contract extension—on reduced terms—to a highly anticipated return to Nacional, the club of his heart, where he could finally close out his legendary career.

At 39, “El Pistolero” has earned the right to decide his own path. And in Miami, the next few days are shaping up to be decisive.

Pay cut to stay in Miami

Inter Miami has already put a renewal proposal on the table, but it’s far from what Suárez currently earns. The club, facing financial constraints—including a pending $16 million payment to Atlético Madrid for Rodrigo De Paul—would require Suárez to accept a significant pay cut if he stays.

Club president Jorge Mas summed it up: “He’s a legend of the game. He deserves to make the decision to leave through the front door, celebrated as he should be. If Luis decides to stay another year, we’d welcome it. Of course, the conversations would then focus on the financial side. The decision is his.”

Miami’s ambition could play in Suárez’s favor. After conquering the US, the club now wants to make its mark internationally in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Still, Suárez’s role would likely be reduced, as seen late this season when he was no longer a guaranteed starter. Meanwhile, the team is already planning for next year, with German forward Timo Werner among the targets.

Nacional calling

Meanwhile, Nacional is preparing a heartfelt pitch. The Uruguayan giants want one last dance with their prodigal son. Talks have been ongoing for weeks, even before Miami’s MLS triumph. Head coach Jadson Viera is expected to make a final call, presenting Suárez with a project where he would be central.

For Suárez, the appeal is clear: a chance to retire on the field, not the bench. Nacional offers him a home to play his final matches at the highest level, competing for the Copa Libertadores, the Uruguayan league title, and alongside close friends like Sebastián Coates and Nicolás Lodeiro.

The ball is in Suárez’s court

There’s understanding on both sides, but no final decision yet. Whether he stays in Miami or returns to Montevideo, Suárez’s next move will define the closing chapter of one of soccer’s most storied careers.
