After the end of the winter transfer window, where they failed to sign a single player, PSG have begun negotiations to renew a number of important members of their squad. One of them is Lionel Messi. Marquinhos, the club captain, is another who is on the verge of renewing his contract, and as for Sergio Ramos, uncertainty remains on the banks of the River Seine.

The Andalusian defender has not yet finalised his contract extension and negotiations are not expected to intensify, at least not until March. L’Équipe report that Ramos’ future in Paris depends on his performances on the pitch, not on other factors. The Champions League matches against Bayern Munich will be decisive in deciding his future.

Ramos’ strong influence in the PSG dressing room

At the club, they are happy with Ramos, above all because of the influence he has in the dressing room and the atmosphere he generates with his team-mates. His season at PSG has been good and he leads several defensive categories in the team. He is also the best player in the whole of Ligue 1 in winning aerial duels according to data analysed by Olocip’s Artificial Intelligence (AI). The former Real Madrid captain has also gotten over the endless injuries he suffered last season, although his latest adductor injury puts his place in the team against Bayern on 14 February in doubt.

In 2022-23, Ramos has made 28 appearances in all competitions and has been a mainstay for Christophe Galtier. However, PSG signed him to win the Champions League, a competition the club has been obsessed with since the new owners came in in 2011. That is why the last 16 Champions League tie against Bayern will be decisive, if not definitive, in the Spanish defender’s future.
