Diego Alonso linked with Club América bench
After the resignation of Fernando Ortiz, the Club América board of directors are looking for a head new coach for Apertura 2023 season.
The fallout from Club America’s Sunday’s 2023 Clausura semi-final loss against Chivas continues to rumble on. Following the the defeat against the side from Guadalajara, America’s head coach Fernando Ortiz resigned from his position and now the board is looking for a new technical director for the next tournament.
According to journalist Alejandro Orvañanos from Claro Uruguay, rumors abound suggest that Diego Alonso is being linked with the Liga MX club. “I know that at some point he was a candidate before Solari or between Solari and Tano, but Alonso took the Uruguayan team”, commented the Claro correspondent.
Alonso is currently between jobs after standing down following the Charruas poor World Cup in Qatar 2022.
Fernando Ortiz led América in two and a half tournaments, in which he reached three separate semifinals but saw his team fall short to Pachuca, Toluca and Chivas.
In the press conference after the match at the Azteca Stadium, the Argentine coach congratulated Chivas and announced his decision to move on.
“First of all, congratulations to Chivas. We have to recognise that today’s rival played better than us, so congratulations to them on reaching the final. Secondly, for me and my coaching staff, our stint with the club has come to an end,” said Ortiz.
Coapa planning
The Águilas will have a busy summer with the Liga MX 2023 Apertura competition set to start on 30 June with the team then participating in the first edition of the Leagues Cup against MLS clubs.
