Diego Cocca’s first test is upon him and his first squad as manager of the Mexico National Team arrived. The Argentine coach has left out Andrés Guardado, who shared with AS a few months ago his desire to retire from national football.

Names from European football dominate the squad list and will be the players to take charge of El Tri. Edson Álvarez, Hirving Lozano, Johan Vásquez and Orbelín Pineda are shaping up to be the crucial figures in the Mexican dressing room given the absence of the Real Betis footballer.

Cocca’s call up

In the Concacaf Nations League, El Tri is in second place in the League A group due to a 3-0 win over Suriname and a draw in Kingston against Jamaica. A win against the ‘Reggaeboys’ would leave the Mexican National Team first in the group, regardless of what happens in the final game against Suriname.

It should be kept in mind that there are 11 footballers who play in Europe: Francisco Guillermo Ochoa being the oldest at 37, and ‘Bebote’ the youngest at 21 years old.

The Mexico National Team squad:

  • Goalkeepers: Guillermo Ochoa, Carlos Acevedo and Antonio Rodríguez
  • Defenders: Israel Reyes, Héctor Moreno, Gerardo Arteaga, Johan Vásquez, Jorge Sánchez, César Montes, Néstor Araujo, Gilberto Sepúlveda, Kevin Álvarez, Jesús Gallardo, Jesús Angulo, Julián Araujo
  • Midfielders: Luis Romo, Arturo González, Carlos Rodríguez, Marcel Ruíz, Diego Lainez, Sebastián Córdova, Edson Álvarez, Erik Lira, Fernando Beltrán, Luis Chávez, Orbelín Pineda and Erick Gutiérrez
  • Forwards: Uriel Antuna, Roberto Alvarado, Henry Martin, Hirving Lozano, Santiago Giménez, Roberto De la Rosa and Raúl Jiménez
