A turbulent few hours for Tigres is set to conclude with former Atlas boss Diego Cocca being named as Miguel Herrera’s replacement in the dugout.

Sources close to the club informed AS Mexico that talks had already taken place between the club’s board, headed by chairman Mauricio Culebro, and the Argentinian boss and that a verbal agreement between the two parties has been reached.

Cocca’s signature is all that is now required to seal the deal, with Los Auriazules expected to make an official announcement on Monday. Cocca has fought off competition from compatriot Nicolás Larcamón, who was also in contention to take over from Herrera after leaving Puebla.

Cocca is already very familiar with Mexican soccer after a short stint as Santos boss in 2011, which preceded his successful spell in charge of Atlas (2020-22), during which time he led the Guadalajara outfit to glory against the odds in the 2021 Apertura and 2022 Clausura tournaments. Cocca, who also led Racing Club to the 2014 Transición league title in his home country, left Los Rojinegros in September with a view to coaching in Europe, which hasn’t transpired.

It now seems certain that the South American will continue his coaching adventure in San Nicolás, where he will attempt to lead one of Mexican soccer’s heavyweights to a first league title since their 2019 Clausura victory.
