Diego Lainez is one of Gerardo Martino’s doubts going into the World Cup. The Braga player has not had the game time he would have liked in Portugal and will fight for a place in the Mexico squad with Roberto Alvarado.

In an interview with TUDN, the former América player reiterated that he has responded when handed the Mexico shirt: “You can’t reproach me for anything, when I’ve done it I’ve done it well, with goals, assists. Every time I’m given the opportunity I’m going to continue along that path.

“It’s [World Cup] something I’ve worked for, not just for the last four years but for a long time and to be at a World Cup is going to be something special for me. It means a lot, it’s a responsibility because you never want to let anyone down, not even the people you love,” said the Mexican player.

Confident of progressing

Lainez added that the Mexico team has everything to make it beyond the group stage. “I think we have a good chance of advancing. It is a very even group, there could be a surprise for anyone, in a World Cup it can happen to any side.”

With the injury of Jesus Manuel Corona, ‘Tata’ Martino will have to choose a winger and Lainez will look to fill the void in the coming days, as will ‘Piojo’ Alvarado.
