Diego Lainez lands in Houston for Gold Cup with Mexico
The Tigres forward comes into the squad to replace Sebastián Córdova for the Gold Cup with Mexico.
Following Sebastian Cordova’s injury, Mexico’s interim head coach Jaime Lozano has called up Diego Lainez to take his Tigres team-mate’s place in the country’s squad. The player, who was in Los Angeles with Tigres, flew from the Californian city to Houston to join up with the national team.
The recent Mexican champions were preparing to play in this afternoon’s Champion of Champions match against Pachuca, but Cordova’s last-minute injury changed plans and Lozano decided to go with the 23-year-old.
Vega out
It won’t be the first time they have worked together. Lainez, as well as 10 other players present at this Gold Cup, were part of the Olympic squad that won bronze at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.
This is the second change to the national team from Diego Cocca’s original list. Roberto Alvarado was also called up to replace the injured Alexis Vega.
