Drake Callender praises Messi and talks up Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia
The Inter Miami goalkeeper spoke at a press conference this Sunday in the run up to Al Hilal - Inter Miami.
Inter Miami’s American goalkeeper, Drake Callender, has risen in prominence since Lionel Messi’s arrival, increasingly becoming a key player for Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino’s team. Ahead of the friendly against Al Hilal, Callender spoke Sunday about the potential impact of these kind of experiences and his awe at playing alongside Messi, as well as acknowledging Cristiano Ronaldo’s impact in Saudi Arabia.
During the press conference hosted by the South Florida club and the Riyadh Season Cup organisers, the 26-year-old talked about what it means to play alongside the 2022 World Cup winner: “Playing with Messi is an amazing feeling. I followed him as a boy and never anticipated playing alongside him, so I am very happy and grateful.”
As to Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Al-Nassr, Inter Miami’s next opponent, Callender noted that the Saudi Pro League boasts many outstanding players, many at Al-Hilal, but Ronaldo leads the pack.
Callender on Inter Miami’s preseason
Speaking about Inter Miami’s preseason, Callender emphasized the importance of the team’s belief in their work. “The most crucial aspect is that we’re convinced of our team efforts. We’re playing away and aware of their good players, which presents a challenge,” he said.
In response to a question from AS correspondent, Fernando Petrocelli, Callender reflected on his progress over the past year, from being the second-choice goalkeeper to gaining a starting role and a national team call-up, expressing his hopes to continue his career growth.
