Edson Álvarez opens up after his failed move to Chelsea: “I cried all day”
Ajax rejected a €50 million offer from Boehly’s big-spending Chelsea for the Mexican midfielder.
Edson Álvarez is undoubtedly the most in-form Mexican player in European football. The footballer who emerged from the Club América youth system is one of the keystones of Ajax but recently had the option of moving to the Premier League with big spenders Chelsea.
In an interview with De Telegraaf, the Mexican midfielder recalled how he experienced that failed transfer to the London club: “I cried all day and then I showed that I am a strong person. Of course the disappointment lasted for a while, but I think everything happens for a reason. Maybe it wasn’t the right time yet.”
‘My time will come’
“My time will come, 100%. That is in God’s hands and mine. And I am working hard to be ready for a new challenge”, said Álvarez. In fact, the only reason he failed to leave the Dutch club was because they had very little time to find his replacement.
Edson has played 19 times in the Eredivisie this season but is yet to score and he has 2 assists. During the FIFA World Cup 2022, he started all but one game of the group stages. he is currently valued at 35 million euros by Transfermarkt, 20 million more than Ajax invested in September 2019.
Álvarez wants to play in Europe
On the other hand, the Mexican expressed his desire to transcend in the ‘Old Continent’: “I came to Ajax to learn, enjoy and reach the next level. Of course, my focus is 100% on Ajax, but if something good, for the club and for me, comes next summer, I will take advantage of that opportunity”, he concluded.
