Real Madrid have been left cursing their luck after Eduardo Camavinga suffered an injury while training with the French national team on Wednesday. The midfielder was unable to complete the session after injuring his knee in an accidental collision with former Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembélé. Initially, it appeared as if the 20-year-old had avoided any serious issue but a later examination led to the decision to release him from the France camp and allow him to return to Spain.

Madrid midfielder Camavinga facing eight weeks out

Camavinga will travel back to Madrid and undergo further tests at the end of the week, which will give an exact diagnosis of what the injury is. However, the French Football Federation (FFF) has indicated the youngster has suffered a knee sprain, with sources telling AS he is likely to be out of action for around eight weeks.

The midfielder will therefore miss his country’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Gibraltar on Saturday and Greece on Tuesday, although they are essentially dead rubbers for France, who have already booked their place in Germany next summer.

Which Real Madrid games could Camavinga miss?

Perhaps more consequential is what it could potentially mean for Real Madrid, who are locked in a battle with surprise leaders Girona and arch-rivals Barcelona at the top of the LaLiga standings. If Camavinga does ultimately miss eight weeks of soccer, he would miss Los Blancos’ next six LaLiga fixtures and their last two Champions League group games (they have, at least, already qualified for the round of 16). He would then face a race against time to be fit to the Spanish Super Cup, which starts on 10 January.

Real Madrid's upcoming fixtures

  • 26 November: Cádiz (a), LaLiga
  • 29 November: Napoli (h), Champions League
  • 2 December: Granada (h), LaLiga
  • 9 December: Real Betis (a), LaLiga
  • 12 December: Union Berlin (a), Champions League
  • w/e 17 December: Villarreal (h), LaLiga
  • 19/20/21 December: Alavés (a), LaLiga
  • 3 January: Real Mallorca (h), LaLiga
  • 10 January: Atlético Madrid (n), Spanish Super Cup

How long is Aurélien Tchouaméni out for?

To make matters worse for Carlo Ancelotti, and indeed France coach Didier Deschamps, Camavinga’s compatriot Aurélien Tchouaméni is also currently sidelined by an injury picked up in Madrid’s Clásico victory over 28 October. The former Monaco man is set to be absent until the second week of December at the very earliest, which will leave the LaLiga giants light in midfield for several matches.

France statement on Camavinga injury

Eduardo Camavinga, who was unable to complete Wednesday’s training session, was examined in the afternoon by Dr. Franck Le Gall, the French national team doctor. The Real Madrid midfielder has sprained his right knee. Today, he has been released back to his club. Didier Deschamps has decided to call up Khéphren Thuram as a replacement. The Nice midfielder will rejoin the team tomorrow in Nice. He will wear the number 6,” announced the FFF.
