Emma Hayes has been appointed as the new head coach of the US women’s national team. The highly-rated tactician, who has led Women’s Super League side Chelsea to league and cup glory during a hugely successful spell at the club, will officially take over in May, when Chelsea’s season ends.

“This is a huge honour to be given the opportunity to coach the most incredible team in world football history,” Hayes said. “The feelings and connection I have for this team and for this country run deep. I’ve dreamed about coaching the USA for a long time so to get this opportunity is a dream come true. I know there is work to do to achieve our goals of winning consistently at the highest levels. To get there, it will require dedication, devotion and collaboration from the players, staff and everyone at the US Soccer Federation.

“I understand how important this team is to the people and culture of the United States, not just the soccer community. I fully understand the place this team has in US society. I’ve lived it. I remember being a young coach working my way up through the system in the US and watching all those young girls aspire to play on the US women’s national team. For me, the honour in building on that legacy is part of my motivation, no question.”

How much will Hayes earn with USWNT?

The 47-year-old has signed a deal that makes her the highest-paid coach in women’s soccer. Hayes’ salary is in the same range as USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter, with reports that Chelsea were prepared to quadruple her current deal to keep her in London.

US Soccer’s annual financial reports reveal the salaries of their head coaches and other executives. Berhalter received a new contract this year, however, his previous deal which ran from April 2021 to March 2022, earned him $1.6 million, including $300,000 in bonuses. The Athletic report that Hayes is expected to earn close to $2 million per year in her deal.

Kilgore to remain in role

When Hayes officially joins US Soccer, she will have four matches on the US bench before the Olympics, two in June and two in July.  Interim head coach Twila Kilgore will continue in her role and then join Hayes’ staff full-time as an assistant coach.
