England 3-3 Germany: summary: score, goals, highlights, Nations League
England Germany: Nations League
England 3-3 Germany (report)
England and Germany drew 3-3 at Wembley on Monday as the hosts surged back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 only for Kai Havertz to level with his second goal as the battle of the Nations League's Group A3 also-rans exploded into a memorable goalfest.
After a first half short on action and quality between the two World Cup-bound rivals Germany gradually took control, going ahead with a 52nd minute penalty by Ilkay Gundogan and a lovely Havertz curler in the 67th. England hit back with two goals in four minutes as Luke Shaw forced the ball in at the far post after 71 and then Bukayo Saka slalomed past three defenders and fed fellow substitute Mason Mount who brilliantly swept home the equaliser.
Another VAR penalty for a foul on Jude Bellingham enabled Harry Kane to put England ahead but just as the crowd were acclaiming the comeback, goalkeeper Nick Pope spilled a shot by Serge Gnabry and Havertz tapped in the loose ball in the 87th. Saka then thought he had won it for England, only for Marc-Andre ter Stegen to touch his shot past the post. (Reuters)
The whistle sounds at Wembley Stadium and it's honours even with all six goals coming in a wild second half.
Italy still lead 0-2 in Budapest and they will win the group and advance to the Final Four in Amsterdam next June along with Netherlands, Croatia and either Spain-Portugal.
We'll have six minutes of time added on.
Into added time at Wembley and what a second half we've had. Germany on top and 0-2 ahead, a great comeback from Germany who took the lead and then a slip-up from Nick Pope to gift Kai Havertz an easy tap in.
Wild action at Wembley !
Saka almost makes it 4-3 but a finger tip save from Ter Stegen saves Germany
Crazy here at Wembley as Germany make it 3-3... Gnabry shot is spilled by Pope and Havertz slots home !
What a turnaround from England... 0-2 down and looking dead and buried... A big result for Gareth Southgate who will enjoy the result as much as any 'Three Lions' fan.
The German defender is carded too.
Kane to take the spot kick.... The Spurs striker to take .... What a hit, high and into the corner to put England ahead
Schlottterbeck clips Bellingham and it's a penalty for England.
Less than 10 minutes to go as the ref trots to the VAR screen for a possible penalty kick for Germany.

Play held up as Kimmich is being treated after sustaining a knee problem.
Shaw pulls England back into the game as the United man strikes from close range.
The second Germany came from a slip-up from Maguire who was dispossessed deep inside the Germany half. Once again, Musiala was instrumental in starting the counter feeding Werner with the finish from Havertz sublime.
Havertz with a wonderful strike... Werner to the Chelsea man who strikes the ball into the top corner.
Foden makes way for Saka with Mount on for Sterling
Musiala feeds Werner but the RB Leipzig striker slides the ball past Pope's post.
The Bayern player has been excellent this evening and is doing everything to secure his place in the Germany XI in the World Cup opener vs. Japan.
Sule now goes close playing a neat one-two on the edge of the box with the defenders shot going inches wide.
Saka and Mount getting ready to make an appearance.
Werner skips into the box and his pull back is poor with three man in the box waiting for the ball.
England looking fragile now.
The Wembley crowd have gone very, very quiet now with the Gundogan spot kick sucking the life out of the atmposphere.
Italy go 0-2 in Budapest with Dimarco on target for the Azzurri
Germany take the lead
Germany gifted a great chance here with poor play from Maguire.
Gundogan to take.... The Man City man slots home
and indeed a penalty for Germany is the outcome....
Musiala clipped by Maguire and that does look like a spot kick...
Ref to check with VAR
Incredible to think that the next games for both teams will be their respective World Cup openers ... England set to face Iran and Flick's men to face Japan.
Fine shot from Sterling as he drives a solid right footed effort which Ter Stegen hold onto well.

Germany switch:
Werner (on)-Hofmann (off)
Looks like Timo Werner is getting ready to make an entrance.
The German side are the first to take to the pitch
A bright 45' of football at Wembley Stadium with England going close through Sterling and Kane.
Germany offered a few glimpses of attacking threat and it was that last minute Kimmich that was the best scoring chance for the visitors.
Italy lead in Budapest
Roberto Mancini's side currently lead 0-1 in Budapest with Raspadori on target for the Azzurri again.
The whistle sounds and it's goalless here at Wembley.
Decent half with both managers set to be pleased with what they've seen.
Kimmich goes close as his right footed shot zips inches wide of Pope's post.
We'll have two minutes of added time
Sterling again breaks through on goal and once again pressure from the German defence as Ter Stegen saves well from the Chelsea striker.
Kane racks up 50 games as captain
The Spurs striker celebrates his half century of games wearing the England captain's armband
Into the final five of the half. Raheem Sterling with the best chance of the night but Germany well on top in terms of possession.
The atmosphere at Wembley goes flat as Stones leaves the pitch. Worrying for any player with the World Cup just a matter of weeks away.
Bad news for England as Stones has to be subbed ... Seems to be a muscular problem as Kyle Walker will replace the City defender.
Raspadori has given Italy the lead in Budapest and this result would see Roberto Mancini's side win the group.
After that bright five minute spell from England, Germany have regained possession of the ball and continue to dominate proceedings.
Still the Sterling chance the best of the evening so far.
The 'Harry Maguire' chant rings out as Kehrer looks for a spot kick... Nothing going for the Dutch match official
And now Kane goes close with a wonderful volley from an acute angle... England have shaken off their lethargy...
Best chance of the night falls to Sterling as the Chelsea forward fires on target form the edge of the box and forces a wonderful stop from Ter stegen.
England press again and Germany manage to avert the danger. England fans making all the noise now.
More nervous defending from England as Germany are just unable to get the final shot on goal as the visitors rob the ball initially deep inside their own half.
Stones almost gifts Germany a ball inside the six yard box but Pope was alert and fires clear. Poor defending from the Man City man.
Sane takes but drives the ball straight into the England wall. Poor strike from the Bayern man.
Dier clips Raum and this is dangerous for England as Gundogan and Sane are over the ball
Approaching the quarter of an hour mark and it's been a bright start to proceedings. England seem unphased and don't look like a side under pressure.
Poor touch from Pope as he lets the ball slip and Gundogan fails to capitalize and fires over. Once or twice we say the keeper overplay the ball at the back at San Siro.
First corner of the night goes to the visiting side... Stones does well to rob Havertz but once again the move breaks down. England looking dangerous on the counters.
Great break from Foden as he robs the ball in the centre of the park, the City man feeds Kane but the delivery is a disappointment and the move breaks down.
Both sides easing their way into the action.... Neither keeper yet to be called upon with decent noise levels being generated at Wembley by the home England fans anxious to do their bit and rally their side in this time of need.
Many eyebrows raised with the selection of Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire for England. Neither player getting action for Manchester United and their playing does contradict with previous Southgate's observations that club performances are key to getting playing time for the national side.
Germany start the action....
We'll have a minute's silence for the passing of the Queen. This is the first England home game since her recent death.
A powerful rendition of 'God Save the King' as the respective captain's pose for the pre game protocol photo....

The teams are in the tunnel....England will be in all red tonight... Germany in white shirts with a black trim and black shorts.
England and San Marino the only two teams in the Nations League yet to find the net (from open play) in this edition of the competition.
New Order's 1990 anthem World in Motion blares from the Wembley Stadium PA system as kick-off looms. England without a win in the group and Germany having just recorded a solitary win.
Having said that, 80,000 fans at the iconic North London stadium and an England-Germany clash is always special.
Less than 15' to go ahead of kick-off at Wembley.
Fair to say that England fans are quickly running out of patience with Gareth Southgate and his team's inability to find the net in more than 450 minutes of football.
Almost impossible to see the FA reacting and sacking the coach at this late stage of the day should England lose again but the pressure would ramp up another level ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
The 'Three Lions' open their campaign in Qatar with a clash against Iran.
The winner of Group 3 of Nations League A will be resolved in Budapest tonight where table topping Hungary face

Germany lucrative WC bonuses announced
Qatar 2022 represents an opportunity for Die Mannschaft to win their fifth title and equal the record, held by Brazil. But a lot has changed since Germany were last crowned world champions in 2014.
The German Football Association (DFB) have given the team an extra incentive to make their World Cup campaign a successful one with a series of performance-related bonuses. Each player will receive a bonus payment of 50,000 euros if Germany manage to qualify from Group E and make it into the Round of 16. The bonuses are on top of the fixed match fee every player will receive for taking part.
Booking a place in the quarter finals will earn Flick’s team 100,000 euros per player and the bonus will rise to 400,000 euros ($390,000) if they lift the World Cup in Lusail on 18 December. Reaching the semi-finals would guarantee 150,000 euros each, while a third-place finish would see playing take home 200,000 euros each. If they go all the way to the final but lose, they will receive 250,000 euros each for ending as runners-up.

Sights set on Qatar
Both England and Germany will start the 2022 World Cup as two of the favourites.
England are pitted in Group B and expected to advance to the next stage with Wales, USA and Iran sharing the group.
Germany are in a tough Group E and will play Japan, Spain and Costa Rica with the top two sides advancing to the Round of 16.

Southgate names England XI
Gareth Southgate remains faithful with his XI from Milan with just Saka missing out...Luka Shaw starts as part of a back 5 for the 'Three Lions'
Flick: "Playing England is always special"
The Germany coach offered his thoughts of Monday's Wembley clash: "Of course it’s a special game. It’s a real classic encounter in one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world. The team are looking forward to tomorrow, and we want to get back on track."
"Overall, it’s important to win because that gives the team confidence and a positive feeling. However, games like the one against Hungary are also part it. We can’t lose confidence in the team, which we aren’t. I have full confidence in the team."
Harry Kane positive ahead of Qatar
“I believe we are going to be judged on how we perform out in Qatar. We’re just in one of those moments where it’s not quite going our way. We’re confident we can turn that around,” he stated.
“We have one more game on Monday to try to get some good feelings back. Ultimately, once we get to the World Cup, we will be ready for that first game and be fully focused on that" stated the Spurs striker.
“I don’t think our confidence has been dented, but you want to win games. We are all experienced enough, with our clubs especially we have been through those moments when things haven’t been going so well. It’s about bouncing back.”
Who is refereeing England-Germany?
Tonight's UEFA Nations League action will see an all Dutch team in charge with match referee Danny Makkelie with assistants: Hessel Steegstra and Jan de Vries. The fourth official is Sander Van Der Eijk with Pol van Boekel in the Video Assistant Referee booth.

Sterling: It is not time for England to panic
Raheem Sterling has defended England boss Gareth Southgate ahead of his side’s UEFA Nations League clash with Germany on Monday.
The Three Lions suffered relegation from the Nations League following Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Italy, and on a poor run with no wins in five matches.
When asked about the criticism aimed at Southgate, Sterling said: “We all know that is what comes with football and playing at the highest level.
“You are under scrutiny and a lot of it is unfair, of course, but that is the level we are at with England,” he said.
“We are always under that pressure to win, and this small loss of form is not something we need to panic about. We now have a big opportunity coming up in the winter to go out and show what we can do again.”
No time to panic: Southgate
England manager Gareth Southgate admitted on Sunday that recent results had been unacceptable but added he was not hiding from criticism after his side were relegated to the second tier of the Nations League.
‘The results haven’t been at the level we want, that we require, so no matter what job you have in football that would be the case,’ Southgate told reporters ahead of their final group game against Germany at Wembley Stadium on Monday. ‘Of course, with the national team that noise is going to be louder and more widespread, I understand that. I’m not hiding from it, we are not enjoying it but we have to keep doing the right things every day to keep improving.’
League A- Group 3: as it stands
It’s a two-way battle at the top between surprise package Hungary and the current European champions Italy with the Magyars only needing a draw (or win) to win the group and advance to the finals stage. England will play the next edition of the Nations League in tier B after their 1-0 defeat to Italy in Milan and pride very much on the line with both the home side and Die Mannschaft both looking to boost their supporters hopes in the last competitive test before the World Cup.
ENG-GER kit showcase
With a World Cup less than two months away, tonight's game offers both nations to showcase (aka sell) their new kits. Germany (the away team) will wear their white home kit with home side England in their red away kit !
Wembley sell-out
Despite nothing riding on the game, an England vs Germany is always a special occasion with a full house expected at the North London stadium tonight where 80,000 fans are anticipated to attend... not bad for a Monday night in late September !
The last meeting between the European powerhouses came in the Nations League back in June with the game at Munich's Allianz Arena ending 1-1 after a late Harry Kane penalty secured a point for England.
Last ENG-GER Wembley meeting
The 'Three Lions' last crossed paths with Germany in the Round of 16 at Euro 2020 as second-half goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane sealed the win for England in their first knockout game of the competition.
The game will be a huge opportunity for both national team managers to impress as tonight's game will be the last time we see England and Germany in action before the 2022 World Cup.
England confirmed their relegation to League B last Friday with a 1-0 loss to Italy and Germany's defeat to surprise package Hungary ruled them out of any outside tilt at winning the group.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of England vs Germany, one of the great fixtures in international football as the curtain comes down on the current UEFA Nations League.
