Arsenal have completed the signing of former Manchester United striker Alessia Russo on a free transfer.

Russo was the subject of a bid believed to be in the region of $500k from the Gunners in January but the approach was rejected by United at the time.

The fee would have made her the most expensive player in the history of the women’s game.

The 24-year-old scored 22 WSL goals in 46 appearances for United as the club went on to finish second in the league.

She turned down several offers to stay at United and leaves the club after three years.

Russo leaves United

A United statement on Russo last month read: “Manchester United can confirm that Alessia Russo will leave the football club on completion of her contract at the end of June.

“Everyone at the football club would like to thank Alessia for her service and wish her luck for the future.”

The England striker’s departure from the team she joined in 2020 will be a massive blow to the Old Trafford side, where she led the line so well.

Before joining United, she had spells with Chelsea, Brighton and North Carolina Tar Heels.

England international

Russo has scored 11 times in 21 games for England and will be part of the squad playing at the Women’s World Cup which gets underway in Australia and New Zealand on 22 July.

At Euro 2022, she came off the bench to score four times, including a brilliant backheel in the semi-finals before England won their first women’s major tournament.
