Gareth Southgate has confirmed the names of the 26 players who will head to Germany ahead of Euro 2024 with the ‘Three Lions’ going into the tournament as one of the top favourites.

Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire were the two high profile omissions from Southgate’s original squad with the United player reportedly carrying a knock. James Maddison, Jarrad Branthwaite, James Trafford, Curtis Jones and Jarrell Quansah were the others players released from the England provisional squad of 33.

Southgate ‘excited’

Southgate said he is confident that fans will come to be captivated by the “different” squad he has named for this month’s European Championship in Germany.

“There’s some disappointment today but there’ll be a lot of excitement about players we’ve selected and to see some of the players who mean we’ve got a different look about us in terms of how we play,” Southgate told reporters adding “I think people will be captivated by that but I’m hugely excited about the squad.”

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal).

Defenders: Lewis Dunk (Brighton & Hove Albion), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle United), Kyle Walker (Manchester City).

Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Declan Rice (Arsenal) y Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace).

Forwards: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

Southgate did admit that the absence of 6′4″ Maguire could reduce England’s aerial strength, but stressed that the other defenders in the team had other valuable attributes that would make up for it.

“I think all the centre-backs in the squad are ready,” he said. “They’ve all had experience with us. Ezri (Konsa) has had an excellent season. Marc (Guehi) is the one that’s had more opportunities with us. We’ve seen what he can bring for a while.

“Look, we’ll be different. We’ll miss Harry’s aerial presence. There’s no doubt about that but there’s more speed in those guys so everybody has different attributes.”

England face Iceland in a friendly game on Friday before starting their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on 16 June with Slovenia and Denmark the other teams in Group C.
