Hosts England face Spain in the first quarterfinal match-up of Euro 2020. The game is being staged at the Amex Stadium in Brighton, home to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion where the Lionesses thrashed Norway 8-0 in the group stage. Sarina Wiegman’s side cruised through the preliminary rounds, scoring 14 times without reply as the in-form Beth Mead helped herself to five.

As such, England have emerged as one of the tournament favourites, a status enhanced by the struggles of the Netherlands under new coach Mark Parsons, France’s internal issues and 2017 runners-up Denmark’s failure to get out Group C alongside Spain.

Spain struggling without Putellas and Hermoso

Jorge Vilda’s La Roja have hardly set out their own stall at the tournament so far. A 4-1 victory over Finland was followed by a 2-0 defeat against Germany and a place in the last eight was secured on the final day of group action when Denmark were seen off 1-0. Spain are without top scorer Jenni Hermoso and Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas in England and have so far relied on their ability to retain the ball – mirroring the tiki-taka employed by their male colleagues during their pomp and the individual skill of Aitana Bonmatí – player of the match twice in the group stage - and Patri Guijarro in midfield, ahead of a solid defensive base and with some trickery on the wings from Sheila García and Mariona Caldentey.

Vilda has a strong bench, with the likes of Clàudia Pina and Athenea del Castillo providing additional attacking verve, but what Spain lack is a true goalscorer. Athletic’s Lucía García has been leading the line but has not found the net since the Finland win and it was left to Marta Cardona to provide a 90th-minute winner against Denmark to see Spain into the quarters.

Given England’s scoring prowess, a boisterous home crowd and Spain’s occasional defensive lapses, La Roja will have to significantly up their game to make the semis at the expense of the hosts in Brighton.
