England vs Senegal: The lay of the land
England look the part
Sunday’s match between England and Group A runners-up Senegal will be the first meeting between the nations and incidentally, Senegal’s first appearance at the knockout stages of the World Cup since the 2002 edition of the tournament in Korea/Japan. Where form is concerned, Gareth Southgate’s side head into the match after what was a comfortable 3-0 win over Wales on Tuesday. Indeed, it was an ideal response to the frustrating draw that they played out with the U.S.A. back on November 25th. Their next opponent, however, is one they will have to be cautious with.
Senegal has no reason to fear
Where Senegal is concerned, Aliou Cisse’s team finished Group A with six points from three games after following up a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands with 3-1 and 2-1 victories over Qatar and Ecuador respectively. This is made even more impressive, by the fact that they are in the tournament without the outrageously talented Sadio Mane, who sadly, was forced to miss the tournament due to injury. Interestingly, the ‘Lions of Teranga’ are the only African side to have beaten a European nation at this stage of the tournament, having beaten Sweden in the Round of 16 back in 2002. Indeed, they will have reason to be confident going into this tie after a significant improvement following their opening loss. Both teams will know their potential quarterfinal opponents before a ball is kicked with France and Poland facing each other earlier in the day.
England vs Senegal: The Prediction
On paper the ‘Three Lions’ are the better team, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned in this World Cup, it’s that what’s on paper doesn’t matter. Also, Senegal has lions of its own and they hail from Teranga. While we think this one is going to be close, it may just be that the English have what it takes to book a spot in the quarterfinals. We’re going with a 2-1 win for Gareth Southgate’s men.
The Senegalese Way
One of the most interesting things about the ‘Lions of Teranga’ is the word ‘Teranga’ itself. Not a place, but rather a concept, the word is said to defy translation and refers in general to a significant component of Senegalese culture. In principle, the word which comes from the Wolof language means ‘hospitality,’ but in truth it means a whole lot more. Encapsulating a state of mind that is rooted in spiritual belonging, it is an ideal that has been passed down through generations of the country’s history. With that said, we don’t imagine they’re going to be very agreeable when they meet the English on Sunday. Enjoy!
