England vs Senegal: Qatar 2022 World Cup round of 16

ENGLAND 3-0 SENEGAL FT: France await in the quarter-finals!

If you'd told me after 35 minutes that England would go on to win this game 3-0, I would have found it difficult to believe. After a bright start from Gareth Southgate's team, Senegal has grown into the contest and created the two best chances. But they didn't score when they were on top and were made to pay. England's runs from midfield were the key to cutting open the Senegalese defence, with Jude Bellingham and Jordan Henderson breaking forward in the same move to combine for the opening goal. Bellingham capped a superb performance with another assist for Harry Kane on the stroke of half-time, which almost completely killed Senegal off.

England came out strong at the start of the second half and it was just a matter of time until they got their third through Bukayo Saka just before the hour. There wasn't much to report after that, with Southgate's team taking their foot off the pass and Senegal not creating a single chance of note.

England cruised to victory and a place in the quarter-finals, where they surely won't have it as easy against France.

England manager Gareth Southgate: Henderson knits the team together

The last one and it's the boss himself, Gareth Southgate.

On what pleased him most about the performance: "I think the ruthlessness of our execution. But the way the team worked off the ball and without the ball.

"We were a bit sticky with the ball in the first 25 to 30 minutes but really our best opportunities came from winning the ball from them."

On his midfield's pressing: "I thought Jude and Hendo (Jordan Henderson) were outstanding in that aspect of the game.

"They're both forward-thinking, forward running midfield players. Hendo doesn't get many goals for us but I think he's been outstanding. He knits the team together. He has been outstanding around the camp, he is a real leader. His performances have been top drawer for us."

Jude Bellingham: Henderson is so underrated

Man-of-the-moment Jude Bellignham has also been in front of the mic:

"The first 35 minutes were tough. They were really compact and tough to get through."

"It was one of those games where we needed to get the first goal, we knew after we did we would be in a good position."

On Jordan Henderson: "Brilliant performance today. I have seen some of the rubbish said about him playing. It is ridiculous, he is so underrated technically. He delivered again in a big game with a massive goal. I think it is time he gets a bit of respect.

"We have shown we can score goals, we are clinical when it matters. And we got the clean sheet again."

Fodaldo

Not bad company for young Phil.

England's attackers look to be on their game, which bodes well for next Saturday against France!

Bukaya Saka: Bellingham was everywhere

Bukayo Saka was next to speak to ITV:

"It's an unbelievable evening. I'm so happy. We played some unbelievable football."

On Jude Bellingham: "I always say he's the future but he's the present as well. He was everywhere tonight and in the previous three games."

"It means so much for us to go far in this competition. I'm so happy to score my first goal in the knockouts and I hope I can score a few more."

On Kylian Mbappé and France: "We know how good he is but we have an unbelievable coaching team and we have to believe they'll pick the right team and the right game plan."

Sterling unavailable due to robbery

Here are the details of why Raheem Sterling wasn't involved in tonight's game.

Hopefully nobody was hurt in the incident.

Foden: Bellingham will be the best midfielder in the world

Phil Foden also spoke to ITV post-match:

"We are going to celebrate tonight but it is knockout football now so we will have to recover and then think about the next opponent. It will be tough."

"Senegal went man to man and were very physical but it was about biding our time and keeping the ball moving more."

On Jude Bellingham: "I don't want to big him up too much because he is still young but he's one of the most gifted players I have ever seen. He has no weakness in his game. I think he will be the best midfielder in the world."

On France: "They look like the strongest in the competition up to now. We back ourselves every day and we are confident."

England captain Harry Kane: Our mentality was top from the beginning

England captain Harry Kane, speaking to ITV after the match:

"Knockout games are never easy. We've shown great maturity throughout the tournament. Our mentality was top from the beginning and we took our chances when they came."

"We feel good. We've got good runners, we've got good players going forward and solid at the back."

On his goal: "I had so much time. The ball sat up nicely. The connection was perfect."

On the youngsters (Foden, Saka and Bellingham): "All three of them were brilliant, they've had big parts in the goals. We've got a great mixture of youth and experience. Another knockout win, over the years it's not been easy for England."

On facing France: "It's going to be a really tough game but it'll be a good battle."

Reaction coming up

Reaction from the game coming up, starting with England striker Harry Kane!

Confirmed quarter-finals

There are two confirmed quarter-final match-ups so far:

Netherlands   vs Argentina

England vs France

That looks tasty! The big guns are not messing about (apart from Germany, sorry...).

Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham the main men

Kylian Mbappé lit up France's game against Poland with two goals and Jude Bellingham turned on the style for England against Senegal. These guys are two of the hottest properties in world soccer and they're showing exactly why in the 2022 World Cup!

Comfortable for England (after those two first-half Senegal chances...)

Here's one for you xG fans!

Senegal actually had more efforts on goal but were much less threatening. That said, they had two BIG chances in the first half.

Six days until France vs England

It's six whole days until France face England...I literally cannot wait that long!

90+2

Dieng has just fired a free-kick into the wall, which is barely worth mentioning. However, Jack Grealish was acting as draft excluder in the wall...

Has a draft excluder ever stopped a free-kick in soccer? Answers on a postcard.

Four minutes of added time.

90

Nearly a fourth!

Shaw gets round the outside of Grealish and dinks one up to the back post for Rashford, who hits the outside of the post on the stretch.

88

WOW! One of the highest shots I've ever seen I think...

Sabaly's cross is cleared out to Pape Sarr who winds one up...the less said about that one the better.

87

France vs England in the quater-finals!

Absolutely nothing happening at the moment. So maybe it's time to start daydreaming about France vs England.

Mouthwatering!

84

Senegal change

Ballo-Touré comes on for Jakobs for the last few minutes.

83

Senegal have kept at it but the reality is that they've offered absolutely nothing in attack. Until now that, as Diédhiou gets on the end of a cross from the left but heads well over.

81

Jordan Henderson off

Kalvin Phillips comes on for the last few minutes. A superb display from Henderson. Capped by a goal, of course.

80

You can bet your life that Jack Grealish will be taking the ball on a few runs in the last 10 minutes. Dieng doesn't like the sound of that though and cuts him down. Looked a sore one.

79

Almost another for Kane! Rashford is set away down the right wing and crosses low for Kane but the ball is just too far ahead of him and he can't quite reach it!

Jude Bellingham: the ultimate all-rounder

Is there anything this man can't do?

Come on Jude, give the rest of them a chance!

76

Jude Bellingham replaced

What a performance from Bellingham, especially in the first half! Mount replaces him, while Eric Dier comes on for John Stones.

75

Koulibaly has had enough of Kane and charges through the back of him in midfield. Needless and not especially dangerous, but he gets a yellow.

73

That might be the first Senegal effort on goal in the second half! Pape Sarr lines up a free-kick from range and curls into the side netting. Pickford had it covered.

72

Senegal sub

Diédhiou replaces Dia in the Senegalese attack.

69

Henderson is still on, by the way. He's shaken off the knock he picked up a few minutes ago.

Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford leading the way

Three goals for Saka and for Rashford...so far.

The Senegalese band sounds as if it's got a little quieter but they're still going, full credit to them!

65

Saka and Foden off

Marcus Rashford does finally make an appearance and Jack Grealish is the other man coming on.

62

Henderson looks as if he's taken a sore one there from Gueye. England changes imminent.

Bukayo Saka proving his worth for England

There was plenty of criticism online for Gareth Southgate for not picking Marcus Rashford but Bukayo Saka has once again shown why he's starting in this England team.

56

GOOOOOOOOOOAL ENGLAND! BUKAYO SAKA!

Surely England can start thinking about France now??

Lovely play down the left from Foden, a nutmeg cross and a delightful first-time flick from Saka, who scores for the third time in the tournament.

Senegal have Everestto climb.

55

KANE FROM DOWNTOWN!

Harry Kane just wants to make sure Edouard Mendy is paying attention. The England striker surprises everywhere by shooting from 35 yards and almost deceives Mendy, who does just enough to save.

Jordan Henderson: goal machine

This is a bit of a mad stat, isn't it?

53

Wide from Saka!

Excellent anticipation from Rice, who wins the ball, passes to Kane and continues his run. The Spurs striker ignores him though and picks out Saka, who slices it wide.

52

Foden trying to feed Kane through for a third goal but they get their wires crossed and the ball runs through for a goal kick.

49

We could do with an early goal from Senegal to make this interesting and there were promising signs there! Sabaly gets in behind Shaw and his cross is cleared out to sub Sarr, who drags his shot wide.

47

Midfield runners have been massive for England so far and Henderson does it again here, although his chipped cross is easily headed away by the Senegalese defence.

Away we goooooo! Is there any hope here for Senegal?

Triple change for Senegal

Pape Matar Sarr, Dieng and Gueye are on. Diatta, Ndiaye and Ciss are hooked.

Big moves from Aliou Cissé!

England spreading the goals around

"Good teams have goals everywhere in the team," said every pundit ever.

We know goalkeeper Jordan Pickford loves a penalty, too.

It's taken him a bit of time to get going in front of goal in this World Cup but Harry Kane has got his goal.

It was never in any doubt really, was it?

Jude Bellingham makes the difference for England

Jude Bellingham has been immense so far. The stats back it up. Whoever gets him after Borussia Dortmund (Real Madrid? Liverpool?) is going to have some player on their hands.

And he's still only 19...

ENGLAND 2-0 SENEGAL: Southgate's boys with a foot in the quarter-finals!

Half-time and England look set for a collision course with France!

Soccer is a funny old game, isn't it? After a bright start from England, Senegal had weathered the storm, played their way into the game and created the best two chances of the first 35 minutes

Aliou Cissé's men were in the ascendency until Jude Bellingham took matters into his own hands. The Dortmund man's runs from midfield led to goals for Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane as England ruthlessly punished their opponents.

Henderson's goal completely transformed Gareth Southgate's team, who had looked flat and short of ideas but finished the half full of energy and threatening in attack.

45+2

GOOOOOOOOOOAL ENGLAND! HARRY KANE

That could be a HUGE goal in this game!

The best time to score, the worst time to concede.

Ciss lost possession as Senegal looked to attack and England pounced. Bellingham is the key man again, breaking past the Senegal midfield and playing in Kane, who finishes emphatically!

Is there much hope for Senegal? That's a killer!

Two minutes of added time. Two minutes is the new 'finishing before the 45th minute.'

44

Declan Rice is next to break forward from midfield but his cross from the right-wing is cut out by Koulibaly.

Amazing how a goal can change everything.

42

England are in again!

Shaw pounces on a loose ball, plays and one-two with Bellingham and sprints into the box. He takes one touch too many though and his cross is blocked out for a corner, which is cleared.

40

Another chance for England!

Pickford's long goal kick ends up with Saka, who beats his man out wide and crosses for Kane, who fires it over. You would've fancied him to do better from there.

Senegal will feel hard done by, they were the ones on top.

38

GOOOOOOOOAL FOR ENGLAND!

Henderson! Against the run of play!

That did not look like it was coming at all. The ball is played into Kane and both Bellingham and Henderson make forward runs off him, which it what creates the goal. Kane plays Bellingham through and the Dortmund squares to Henderson, who has the simple task of slotting it into the net.

35

Sarr is looking dangerous down this left-hand side! He beats Kyle Walker and starts to race towards the England box but his hauled back by the defender. Walker is lucky that wasn't a yellow card.

Earlier miss from Sarr

This is that earlier miss from Sarr. He was under pressure from Pickford but he'll have been disappointed not to have scored.

After that bright start from England, Senegal have had the two best chances of this game. By far!

31

HUGE SAVE FROM PICKFORD!

Saka loses the ball in his own half and Sarr drives into the box and cleverly picks out Dia, whose firm strike is brilliantly kept out by Pickford.

29

Some possession for Senegal now but they're also struggling to find a way through. A bit of a stalemate at the moment.

26

England are moving the ball around VERY slowly at the moment. Remember I said they'd started brightly? Well, that's over now.

25

Senegal started off pressing high up the pitch and they're still doing that from time to time but they're also keeping a good defensive shape when they don't have the ball.

22

A HUGE LET-OFF FOR ENGLAND!

Dia and Stones challenge for a cross at the near post and it falls to Sarr, who lifts the ball over from close range! He should've done better there!

20

Well, it was a chance! John Stones got on the end of it at the near post but it comes off his shoulder and flies well wide of the target.

20

Corner for England! What can they make of this?

18

A bit of a lull in play as England knock the ball around. Both teams having a little breather after an intense start.

Sounds of Senegal

The Senegal fans have managed to sneak their instruments in and are making a lot of noise so far!

15

A very bright start from England so far. No clear chances yet, though.

14

Pickford had to be quick there! The ball was played back to him and Sarr raced in to close him down, he almost got a block in!

12

Could Saka have done better there??

Kane is free down the left and whips a dangerous ball across goal between Mendy and Saka, who could've been braver there, if you ask me...

11

It's been an all-action display in the opening 11 minutes from Jude Bellingham. He's been everywhere!

9

The first casualty of the game is the ball, which has burst.New ball please.

8

Flappy hands there from Mendy as Bellingham breaks down the left and crosses, the Senegal goalkeeper got a touch on it but couldn't collect. Thankfully for him, Saka was too far away to capitalise.

7

Abdou Diallo, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

The Senegal centre-back takes a huge risk inside his own box and almost allows Saka to nick if off him.

6

VERY physical in the opening stages! Bellingham wins a foul in the Senegal half and a well-worked free-kick is headed across goal by Maguire before being scrambled away. Cleverly done, that.

5

Ciss chops Bellingham down in midfield in a classic 'let-him-know-your´re-there-early-on' tackle. Senegal not giving England time on the ball.

3

Nearly an early opening for Senegal!

Dia runs between Maguire and Stones and looks as if he's going to get a shot away but takes an extra touch and loses control at the vital moment!

2

Good closing down from Henderson to win the ball off Mendy in the Senegal half. That's what he's in the team for.

1

Phil Foden starting out on the left for England, as expected, but it's not often you see left-footed players playing on the left these days, is it?

1

An awkward backpass for Pickford to deal with in the opening seconds, he can only hoof it out of play.

And away we goooooooo! Come on, more drama please!

First ever meeting between England and Senegal

These teams have never met before so there should be no mental scars for either...

National anthem review

I think most of us have heard 'God Save the King' (previously 'Queen') plenty of time. My main question is how many players forgot to change from 'Queen' to 'King' for the first game of the tournament? A very short version here.

A jaunty number for the Senegalese which shouldn't strike fear into the English. A lot of whispering going on from the players...

Almost time!

The teams are in the tunnel! National anthems coming up!

Senegal

Senegal at the World Cup

Senegal had never played in the World Cup until 2002. Then they beat France in one of the most memorable opening games ever played and reached the quarter-finals, where they lost to Turkey.

Can they repeat - or better - that in their third World Cup appearance?

England at the World Cup

You may be aware that England won their one and only World Cup in 1966 on home soil.

Since then, they're reached the semi-finals twice, in 1990 and 2018.

Gareth Southgate has led his country to a semi-final and then a final in two tournaments, so you know what the logical next step is

15 minutes until kickoff!

Are you excited? Who's excited? I'm excited!

The last few nights of World Cup action have been exhilarating, I'm expecting more of the same!

England boss Gareth Southgate: We've got an embarrassment of riches

Speaking pre-match, England boss Gareth Southgate has had this to say on the decision to leave out Marcus Rashford:

"Saka was excellent in our first two matches. We think Marcus was also very good and it’s great to have him to be able to come into the game as it opens up. We’ve of course got an embarrassment of riches in that area of the pitch."

“We’ve liked Bukayo’s performances and we think Phil and him deserve their opportunity.”

England vs Senegal pre-match

AS USA's Paul Reidy is at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor for this one and has just sent me this as kick-off approaches.

I have no photo confirmation of whether he has joined the Senegalese fans in wearing face paint for the occasion.

WORLD CUP 2022

Aliou Cissé on Senegal tragedy ahead of England clash

I mentioned that Senegal boss Aliou Cissé had been struggling with illness and he's had a really horrible time of it of late.

In September, he lost 11 members of his family at once, including his sister.

Kieran has more on this tragic tale.

A colourful atmosphere in Al Khor!

The atmosphere is building nicely in Al Khor and it definitely looks as if it's going to be a colourful affair, mainly thanks to the Senegalese fans!

30 minutes until kick-off!

Senegal: Qatar 2022 World Cup so far

Drawn in a group with Netherlands, Ecuador and Qatar, the key game for Senegal was always going to be their last one against the South Americans. Everyone beat the hosts, while Ecuador, unlike the Lions of Teranga, picked up a point against the Dutch, which meant Senegal had to win on matchday three.

Thankfully for them, that's exactly what they did, and here they are.

England were hot favourites to take maximum points from their group but stumbled to a draw in their middle game against the USMNT either side of big wins against Iran (6-2) and Wales (3-0). Gareth Southgate's men ended the group stage as the joint-top scorers but know that bigger challenges await. Will Senegal be one such challenge?

Senegal assistant Regis Bogaert: We know we can win

Cissé didn't show up for his press conference because of his illness and it was left to assistant Regis Bogaert to speak to the media instead.

“We are feeling calm and confident. We know that Senegal can beat England, that is what we are aiming for. I think we will get more excited as the match gets closer but you have to remain calm and focused on the objective – and our objective is obviously to get to the next round."

“Four years ago we went through that experience but the team has grown, we lost and won an [AFCON] final and the team is developing and becoming more mature. That maturity is very important at international level, African teams need to be ambitious and they are good enough to go head-to-head, eye-to-eye with anybody and we are capable of beating anyone."

“When we go out on the pitch we have to be aware of that. The more you play in top clubs around the world, the more you will mature and become top-notch players and that is what we are seeing now."

“I hope that the English are going to underestimate us and we will surprise them, that is what we are looking for.”

Senegal boss Cissé expected to be on the touchline

Senegal boss Aliou Cissé has been sick the last few days but is expected to be in the dugout for the game.

You really wouldn't want to miss this one, would you?

Gareth Southgate: We know the size of the job ahead of us

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live yesterday, England boss Gareth Southgate admitted his team were favourites to win but was keen to talk up Sunday's opponents:

"We will be considered favourites. But that doesn't really mean anything in a one-off game."

"It doesn't mean there isn't any pressure for Senegal because every international team has great pressure in their own nation and externally as well."

"We have been very impressed with Senegal. They are African champions and are very proud and have great spirit and belief in their team. They have some excellent individual players who can cause problems, but a good structure as well. Cissé has done a fantastic job. We know the size of the job ahead of us."

He also compared the mentality of the players compared to the last World Cup, when England were under slightly less pressure to succeed:

"We are two tournaments on from when we played Colombia at this stage in Moscow. I think our level of experience is better, our level of ambition is different."

"When we qualified from our group stage in Russia, we were probably celebrating quite a bit. This time was a great evening for our fans and we enjoyed the win, but we were already thinking of the next game. We know the focus has to be on this one game, nothing else."

"We are aiming to win the game and avoid extra time and penalties, but if we need to go 120 minutes or beyond that we have to be ready for that mentally and physically and I believe we are."

Jordan Henderson starts

Jordan Henderson didn't start either of England's first two games but keeps his place in midfield to face Senegal after a fine display in the 3-0 win over Wales.

Mason Mount is the main victim, with Southgate seemingly opting for a steelier midfield.

Senegal starting line-up vs England

We're expecting a 4-2-3-1 for Aliou Cissé Senegal tonight:

Mendy; Sabaly, Koulibaly, Diallo, Jakobs; Ciss, Mendy; Ndiaye, Diatta, Sarr; Dia.

Four players who play their club football in England.

Senegal starting line-up vs England

And we've got the Senegal line-up to take on England too!

No Idrissa Gueye, who's suspended. That'll be a big blow.

And here it is as a nice graphic.

Jordan Henderson preferred to Mason Mount in midfield. Still think it's a bit harsh on Rashford...

England starting line-up vs Senegal

Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Bellingham, Henderson; Saka, Kane, Foden.

4-3-3 by the looks of it?

Walker keeps his place, Foden starts ahead of Rashford.

I'm not sure I'm a massive fan of Senegal's training kit but some would say fashion has never been my strong point.

Raheem Sterling out due to 'family matter'

Marcus Rashford isn't expected to start but it won't be Raheem Sterling who takes his place. England have confirmed he won't be involved due to 'family' reasons. Hopefully nothing too serious.

Al Bayt Stadium hosts England vs Senegal

The venue for the game is the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, which holds just shy of 69,000 people.

There had been only six goals in five matches up until the last one it hosted, Germany's 4-2 win over Costa Rica in the group stages.

Let's keep it going please!

England back in the mix

Remember the 2010 and 2014 World Cups? England were hopeless.

Eight years is a VEEEEEERY long time in football and they're now considered by some to be one of the favourites to win the tournament having reached the semi-finals of the last World Cup and lost in the final of Euro 2020.

Rashford dropped?

Nothing has been confirmed so far but there are strong rumours circulating that Marcus Rashford will drop to the bench for England against Senegal. That's a big call, he was great against Wales, scoring twice.

Giroud becomes France's all-time top scorer

As well as Mbappé, England or Senegal will also have Olivier Giroud to worry about in the next round. He's now become France'a all-time top goalscorer, beating Thierry Henry's record.

Magnifique

France await in the quarter-finals!

It's all over in today's other game! A late consolation penalty from Robert Lewandowski means little as France ease through to the quarter-finals!

Another two goals for Kylian Mbappé...it's looking ominous for whoever gets through England vs Senegal...

Two hours until kickoff!

Senegal, are you ready?

Two hours to go until kickoff!

France vs England or Senegal in the quarter-finals

I don't think I'm jumping the gun here.

It's 3-0 to France heading into stoppage time and Kylian Mbappé has just curled a beauty into the top corner. Wow!

Kieran will tell you more and bring you some reaction from that one here

Qatar World Cup 2022: Senegal national team roster | Selected players and omissions

Again, no team news just yet from Senegal, so let's take a look at their roster for the tournament. They've been hamstrung so far by the fact that star man Sadio Mané of Bayern Munich suffered an injury just days before the start of the World Cup. Ah, what could have been...

Actually, can we say that? They're still in the tournament, so probably not. Although I would given them a better chance of upsetting England if Mané were playing.

2-0 to France...guess who?!

France look almost certain to be going through in the day's early game.

And it's Kylian Mbappé (of all people) who's smashed in their second goal with just over 10 minutes left to play.

Remember that the winner of that one faces the winner of England vs Senegal on Saturday, 10 December.
