Well, it got quite nervy towards the end, but by the last 20 minutes, England had calculated that the best option was to leave the stadium with a draw, as coming out any further would have allowed a dangerous looking USA team to take advantage of the space.
They were solid throughout the game and limited England - who looked unstoppable after the Iran game - to a few clear chances. Turner made some good saves when he was called upon but he wasn't tested maybe as much as England would have hoped.
What to say about England? They looked a bit 2018-y, with the main threat coming from set pieces and being quite unadventurous at times. Maguire was solid, if you're looking for positives, and, apart from Kane's golden chance right at the end, I can't think of a set piece for either team that didn't land on his head. Maybe if Maguire got on that, it would have been a different story.
So, England are all but through; the USA will fight it out against, *checks notes*, Iran for the final place, next Tuesday.

Kane's head is in his hands and he is kneeling on the pitch, he can't believe he missed the free header from 6 yards out.
Zimmerman makes a huge mistake in build up and he lays a stray pass right to Grealish, who sprints directly towards goal.
Tyler Adams makes a potentially game-saving challenge to stop the counter attack, conceding a free-kick out on the left.

Pulisic's corner flies over them all. He wasn't involved in the meeting.
A shot from Pulisic from the edge of the box bounces off the leg of a defender and almost sits up for Weah, who was sniffing around inside the box.

A slow build up from the US switched into a high-speed race once the Valencia man got on the ball, almost resulting in a nice cut-back from Weah reaching a teammate.
Nice play from England to get through the overloads from the US. That's more like it, lads.
Rice has dropped a lot deeper this half to get a bit more time on the ball, since I don't even think he knew what colour it was in the first half.
The game has suddenly lost a lot of its shape and has become a bit scrappy. I blame Tyler Adams.
Quite a few stoppages for naughty fouls and nobody is getting into a flow.
Bellingham has been a lot quieter today than against Iran: the US midfield are doubling up well on him, and rightly so. I want to see more, however - Birmingham did not retire his number for this! (yes, they really did that).
CHANCE FOR USA
Pulisic picks up the ball deep in his own half and runs 40 yards before laying it off to Weah, whose shot from the left side of the box is deflected to McKennie, alone on the other corner.
His shot is fired over.
The USA have England pinned back right now as they play the ball around the box.
Great work from Adams to win the ball and Musah picks up where he left off, driving forward with the ball. A strong opening minute.

The USMNT captain grew into the game well and no doubt caused a lot of frustration between the England players, as he likes to do.

I thought the USA were going to be in for a tough night after the first few minutes, as England's quality would have always shown in a game of ping-pong. As the game settled, my early suspicions were confirmed: England started to play as they did against Iran, keeping the ball at the back before feeding Bellingham, Kane or Saka and asking them to create goalscoring chances, which they kindly did. Kane himself came close after good work from the aforementioned other two, and that's where the US remembered they too were allowed to try and score.
Pulisic switched into gear, as did Yunus and McKennie. Adams started to recover more of the balls and feed the midfielders who could then find Pulisic or Weah to create chances.
The best chance of the game was from Harry Kane, but Pulisic's efforts towards the end - as well as McKennie's close-range hit - will have the England team talking about serious danger in the dressing room. It remains to be seen if Pickford can hear Southgate, as his ears are probably still ringing from the crack that came when Pulisic fired a thunderbolt at the crossbar.
A very 50/50 game, and both teams will be simultaneously happy and worried about their performance. England had the better start, but the US will be pleased about how they survived the pressure and created some good moments for themselves.

A shot from the edge of the box from Mount, hit low and hard to Turner's right, but he gets down well and shows a strong hand to push the ball away.

Shaw with excellent work, making up for his recent defensive weakness.
He charges down the left and slips the ball through a defenders legs before playing a low cut-back to Saka, but his shot is spooned over.
Robinson tries to trap the ball but it rolls through his legs, Rob Green style. Slaps himself in the face as a punishment.
CLOSE AGAIN FROM THE USA
Pulisic this time, with a header after a good cross from the right. Pickford cooly lets it bounce wide, but it was a close one.
I think I'm going to say that the tide has turned in the game, and the USA are now officially on top of England.

Dest gets the ball on the right wing after a nice flick from Weah. He runs down the pitch and cuts inside, with options in the box, but he chooses to shoot, which is deflected away. Wrong decision.
Weah with a cross from the right that flies over everyone's head. There's some joy to be had down that side, that's for sure.
McKennie with some good pressure on Luke Shaw who he scares and the left-back accidentally lets the ball run out of play. Met with huge olés from the crowd.
A loose ball in the USA box causes fright and terror for all, and somehow it's easily cleared away by Turner after Mount attempts to put in a looping cross.
England get a free kick from deep, which they send to Maguire's forehead (obviously) but it's cleared. So far, the US have dealt well with the long balls and crosses from Southgate's side.
PULISIC OFF THE BAR
McKennie started off the move with one of those silly spins Antony does for Brazil.
He runs down the right channel and the ball makes it over to Pulisic on the left corner of the box. Captain America smacks the poor ball with all his super-strength and it rattles off the corner of the crossbar.
Pickford was nowhere near it.
Mount down now holding his face after McKennie's arm touches the Chelsea player's chest. I hope he survives!
Foul from Rice on Musah, who rolls about 10 yards holding his leg before realising he's right as rain.
Half an hour in, and Kane has still come closest with the toe poke from close-range.
The US have gradually grown into the game slowly, but they've shown that they're definitely no Iran.
SAVE FROM PICKFORD!
Musah with the effort from the edge of the box. It hit a defender and took an awkward bounce, could have gone anywhere.
When England's centre-backs have the ball (and they do a lot), Rice is well covered by the USA press.
The problem is that Stones manages to point straight ahead and pass it between the lines to a midfielder, who is unmarked by any of the three of the USA.
McKENNIE WITH A CHANCE
He hit a shot from 10 yards out over the bar after a cross from the right; England had dropped back but nobody was marking the midfielder.
Close from Sterling as he gets it on the left wing before dancing into the box. Zimmerman gets dizzy and falls over but manages to hack it away.
The game has settled down into a pattern of England having the ball and the USMNT trying to steal it in the middle third, at which point they'll all fire forward into the space behind Maguire and Stones.
It has worked once in 20 minutes.
Yunus steals the ball from Bellingham and the US launch a counter attack down the right with Dest, but it ends up in the hands of Pickford. Better from Berhalter's side.
England fans reply to USA chants with a lovely rendition of Hey Jude. Lots of people in Qatar are fans of The Beatles, I see.
Half chance for USA as McKennie swings in a cross to Wright, but his header goes wide.
A pretty forced attempt at creating a chance, perhaps patience was the correct option. A sign on nerves.
Ream has had a few moments where Kane's movement deep into the midfield line has caused him to doubt his own position. Saka is doing the same on the right; Robinson doesn't know when to stay and when to go.
England look the better side at the moment.
The crowd don't seem bothered, as chants of U-S-A ring out from around the ground...
MORE TROUBLE FOR THE USA
Saka (again) down the right plays a cross in and Kane almost meets it with an overhead kick.
Nerves at the back for the US, as England do what did against Iran and draw them out with slow possession before snapping into action.
A warning shot. Literally.
A bit of madness in the ensuing corner which ends with Maguire forgetting he's not Thierry Henry and launching a shot into the stands.
HUGE CHANCE FOR KANE!
Bellingham makes a run with the ball down the middle and lays it off on the right to Saka, who puts a low cross in.
Kane pokes a toe at the ball from a few yards out but Turner makes a great save. That should probably be 1-0.
This is shaping up to be a chess game: England going long when they think Saka can get the better of Robinson but apart from that, they're happy to pass around the press.
Yunus with some lovely footwork to glide past a challenge in the middle of the pitch - does he have a Brazilian grandparent?

England scramble back and make a tackle on Leeds United's Tyler Adams.
Hm, it actually looks like a 4-4-2 off the ball from the US, which will add another player in the middle line for them. They're trying to block off the routes to Rice and Bellingham, which is an understandable move.
Pretty lively inside the stadium, and the quick, intense start from the USA has definitely helped.
Robinson makes a heroic run with the ball down the left wing but Trippier stops him. No real flow to the game, it's not settled down yet.
McKennie fouled out wide after some nice tiki-taka from the USA. Tyler Adams decides he doesn't like where the foul happened and puts the ball in a completely different place.
USA immediately press high, England go long. It seems like a narrow setup off the ball from Berhalter, like against Wales.

Think the England fans didn't expect it to start when it did, spent the whole time trying to catch up with the music. A good roar, just like a lion, afterwards, mind.
US anthem a lot more coherently sang, but not by the players. Turner with the best effort, in my opinion. A good fistful of the badge at the end.

I was wondering about a nice comparison but I cannot think of anything that has the same colours as that lovely USA kit. I want one, though.
USA pre-match preview
Gregg Berhalter's side had the classic 'game of two halves' against Wales: they started brighter than a medium-sized star but Kieffer Moore got the better of them after the break and they folded in the second half.
The team really struggled with his physical presence in the last 45 minutes of the game and he created all sorts of problems for the defence with his ability to take the ball down from any height, angle or speed, which, when put like that, sounds like a legitimate reason to have a problem.
Against Harry Kane things may be different, as the Spurs striker loves to drop deep and float out wide, dragging defenders with him as he goes on his adventures around the pitch. The defence will also have to watch out as Kane likes to, let's say 'draw a foul' in and around the box.
Leeds United's Tyler Adams will have a tough job marshalling the middle of the pitch as Kane flits in and out like a nosy neighbour.
Up front, the USA will have to find the same spark Weah gave them for the goal, as apart from that, I can't see the England defence being troubled too heavily going off what we saw against Wales. Direct running, vertical passing and quick movement may make Harry Maguire sweat as the defender sometimes has problems doing defender things.

Joe's pre-match preview: England
Ok, I thought I'd give my, well, thoughts on how the game might go.
England come into this match after the 6-2 win against Iran (that you can read about below) and their squad seem full of confidence and happy people, which can never be underestimated in a short tournament.
England looked quite different to how they did in previous tournaments, where we saw them be very slow and stodgy and look like they had stones in their boots.
Instead, we saw them play their usual game of ball possession at the back, but with an explosive (and decisive) twist: Southgate's side were happy to keep the ball in deep areas and slowly watch Iran creep forwards like sneaky lions, and when England saw they had enough space in the middle - BANG - they would pounce and find the wide players: Saka, Grealish, Rashford and even Kane at times, who would all exploit the space Iran were tricked into giving them.
It looked very fun and England obviously scored more goals than most people have fingers on one hand, but the context of the game must be taken into account: poor Iran had bigger fish to fry and, if we're honest, didn't look in the right headspace for a World Cup group game.
The big question then is: can England still play the way they did last time, against a USA team that will look to scare the heebie-jeebies out of them?
Here's how England got on last time out in Group B, although tonight is likely to be a totally different game.
Southgate press conference:
"Tomorrow's game will be very different to the first match. They are a team that press the ball really well,” he said.
“With respect, a level of player which has experience of playing in top European leagues. In terms of tomorrow it is not going to be a game in the pattern of the previous one.”
“We have never beaten [the USA] in a tournament.”
And you’re right, Gareth. The USA won in 1950, 1993 and 2010.
“You like those balmy nights where it is a nice temperature [just like tonight!], the pitches have been fantastic. I am very happy in the environment we're playing in.”

Gregg Berhalter has his entire squad available, including Yunus Musah, who was a doubt during the week.
The big question regarding the USMNT is whether or not we see Gio Reyna in the starting XI. The Borussia Dortmund forward is a more dynamic option than Josh Sargent and may provide that extra burst of danger against England-s defence.
England team news:
Despite Harry Kane’s ankle scare earlier in the week, scans have come back OK and he’s fit to start this evening. “He’s good. He’s worked a little bit more individually today, but he’ll be back in with the team tomorrow and all good for the game,” Southgate said.
Kyle Walker may feature today, after missing the first game. The right-back has been injured for a while but is on the list of available players.
James Maddison was left inside (that sounds sad, doesn't it, Maddison looking out of the window while all of his friends play outside in the sunshine) while the rest of the team trained outdoors, so will have to wait and see if he can make his World Cup debut.
