Erik ten Hag on Bruno Fernandes: “He’s such a leader”
United took the lead in the 39th minute when Fernandes scored after Villa keeper Martínez pushed away a Rashford shot.
Bruno Fernandes came up with the all-important winner for Manchester United against Aston Villa on Sunday.
Erik ten Hag’s side didn’t win any of their last three Premier League matches against Villa but recorded an important 1-0 victory over Unai Emery’s in-form side to strengthen their grip on the top four in the Premier League.
Marcus Rashford had a fine chance when Fernandes played him in early on but World Cup-winning shot-stopper Emi Martínez denied the England international.
Fernandes goal
United took the lead in the 39th minute when Fernandes scored after Villa keeper Martínez pushed away a Rashford shot and they held on to collect all three points.
Ten Hag backs his captain
Ten Hag has said “it’s crazy” that people questioned the Portuguese player being the captain of Manchester United.
Fernandes has faced questions in the past over his leadership, and Ten Hag gave his thoughts on the talented creator after Sunday’s victory at Old Trafford.
“I emphasise it all on Thursday, he’s so tough. A couple of weeks ago there were questions about his captaincy, it’s crazy,” Ten Hag said.
“He’s such a big leader, he gives so much energy to the team. His determination, his passion, his resilience, we need such players if you want to win games and make trophies.”
United supporters protest
United supporters protested outside Old Trafford before the match, demanding a full sale of the club, amid the ongoing process with the unpopular, outgoing Glazer owners.
“We felt the fans were behind us,” Ten Hag added.
“We have to focus to be successful because that’s what the fans expect, they have to rely on us, we will focus on that.
“When we keep performances like we do all season the fans are behind us, there’s a lot of energy.”
