Four previous tournament winners are in action at Euro 2024 today, as the quarter-finals begin with a pair of heavyweight match-ups. Hosts Germany take on Spain in a clash between three-time continental champions, before 2016 winners Portugal meet France, who have lifted the Henri Delaunay Trophy twice.

The semi-final line-up will then be completed tomorrow, when Euro 2020 runners-up England take on Switzerland, and 1988 champions the Netherlands go up against Turkey.

What tie-breakers are used in the knockout rounds in Euro 2024?

All ties in the Euro 2024 knockout stages are one-off games and will be settled over 90 minutes, if possible. If the two teams are level at the end of regulation time, extra time will be played in an effort to find a winner. Lasting for 30 minutes, extra time consists of two 15-minute halves and is played in its entirety, regardless of any changes to the score.

If the countries involved still can’t be separated after the additional half hour, the match will be decided by a penalty shootout. Both teams get five penalties each, with spot-kicks taken alternately by each side. If the teams remain level after five penalties each, they take additional rounds of single sudden-death kicks until one scores and the other misses.

When are the Euro 2024 semi-finals and final?

Like the quarter-finals, the semi-finals will take place across two days, with the first to be held in Munich on Tuesday July 9 and the second in Dortmund on Wednesday July 10.

The winners of Spain vs Germany and Portugal vs France will be pitted against each other in the opening semi, and the second last-four tie will be contested by England/Switzerland and the Netherlands/Turkey.

The Euro 2024 final will be played on Sunday July 14 at Olympiastadion in Berlin, which previously hosted the 2006 World Cup final between Italy and France, and the 2015 Champions League final between Barcelona and Juventus.
