FC Barcelona given Montjuïc departure date by local city council
The Barcelona local government has set the month of May (2025) as the deadline for the Catalan side to leave the Estadi Lluís Companys.
A question mark still surrounds the precise date and month in which FC Barcelona will return to their redeveloped Spotify Camp Nou home, although it is known that they need to leave Montjuic by May of next year.
The Barcelona City Council have already informed the club in the last meeting they held, via Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (BSM), the body in charge of managing the Anella Olímpica facilities, that as of May (2025), the Montjuïc stadium is preparing to host a series of cultural events and concerts which are incompatible with other types of activities. This means, that, in a nutshell, Hanis Flick’s men will no longer be able to use the stadium in Montjuïc from early May 2025.
In principle, this ultimatum should not be a major inconvenience for the Catalan club given the steady work that is ongoing at Camp Nou with the club briefly considering moving in early 2025, but that initiative is today is losing steam, especially taking into account that UEFA prohibits changing venues during the first phase of the Champions League competition with the last match of the league stage scheduled for 29 January (against Atalanta).
Taking this into account, the club has completely ruled out the possibility of combining LaLiga games at Camp Nou and staging Champions League matches at Montjuïc and will now wait until, at least February before considering a return back to Camp Nou.
Barcelona will therefore have three months (February, March and April) to make the gradual shift a reality. The transition will be staggered, as, in principle only 60% of the capacity will be available with the construction phase of the third tier still undergoing and not expected to be completed until 2026.
Meanwhile, the Turkish construction company (Limak) continues its race against time to meet the deadlines with a spring 2025 destined to be the timeframe when Barça and the club’s supporters make a return to their spiritual home.
