Inter Miami have revealed that Federico Redondo is to sit out the next two months after damaging knee ligaments.

“Redondo has suffered an injury to his left lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and is expected to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks,” Miami said in a statement on Thursday.

Redondo already a regular starter for Inter Miami

Signed from Argentinos Juniors on a three-year contract in February, Redondo has made four appearances for the Herons so far, all as a starter.

The son of former Argentina international Fernando Redondo, the 21-year-old has one assist to his name, in Miami’s 3-1 MLS win over DC United in mid-March.

Miami set for busy first half of April

Redondo’s injury is a major blow to Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino’s team, as they prepare for an action-packed period that will see them play five games between 30 March and 13 April.

In MLS, Miami meet New York City this weekend, before taking on Colorado Rapids on 6 April and Kansas City on 13 April.

They also face a two-legged CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final against Mexican club Monterrey, on 3 and 10 April.

Will Messi play for Inter Miami?

Miami have been without star forward Lionel Messi since beating Nashville in the Champions Cup last 16 on 13 March, as the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner nurses a hamstring injury.

Although the 36-year-old now looks to be closing in on a return to fitness, Messi appears unlikely to ply against New York City this weekend. The club are thought to be targeting the first leg against Monterrey for his comeback.

Nicolás Freire, Benjamin Cremaschi, Facundo Farías, Robbie Robinson and Ian Fray are also currently on Miami’s injury list.
