One of the goalkeepers shaping up to occupy Mexico’s goal at the 2026 World Cup is Carlos Acevedo. Acevedo, who turns 27 next month, can hardly be considered a young goalkeeper, but he has shown that he has the ability to play at international level, and for that reason, Diego Cocca included him in his first squad list as national team coach.

Acevedo’s coach at Santos Laguna, Eduardo Fentanes, commented that his call-up with national team is a deserved reward for the form the keeper has demonstrated in recent tournaments. Acevedo has been capped four times and was called up by Gerardo Martino last year for a few friendlies ahead of the World Cup.

“Carlos has been called up before, in the run-up to the World Cup, so it’s nothing new. But it is encouraging, it is nice for him and I am sure that he will be in good spirits when the time comes to join up with the squad. It’s not only good news for Santos Laguna fans but for Mexican soccer in general,” Fentanes said.

“This is not only because of Santos fans, but also fans from other teams; it’s the product of day-to-day work, it is a fair reward for what he has been doing in several tournaments now,” Fentanes added during his press conference.

Acevedo’s numbers with the Tri

Carlos Acevedo played four complete games with Mexico under previous coach Gerardo Martino. He made his debut against Chile in December 2021 - a friendly in Austin, Texas which ended 2-2. His next appearance was in April 2022, as Mexico crashed to a 0-3 friendly defeat to Guatemala in Florida. He was able to celebrate his first win in the CONCACAF Nations League game against Surinam in June last year and made his last showing against Paraguay - a warm-up match for 2022 Qatar which ended in a 0-1 defeat.
