Update:

Fernando Gago is set to continue his coaching career in Liga MX, this time taking the reins at Club Necaxa.

The Argentine manager has signed a contract through June 2026, replacing fellow countryman Nicolás Larcamón. The news was confirmed by journalist César Merlo after several hours of mounting speculation about Gago’s next move.

At 39, Gago makes his return to Mexican soccer following a brief stint with Chivas Guadalajara during the 2024 season. His time with Chivas was not without controversy and his exit was just as contentious.

Why did Gago leave Chivas?

On October 10, Chivas officially announced Gago’s departure as head coach, a decision that came shortly after he had renewed his contract and publicly stated he had no intention of leaving.

The abrupt nature of his exit raised eyebrows, especially among players. Notably, veteran striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernández criticized the lack of direct communication from Gago, who left while the team was still competing in the season.

Following his departure from Chivas, Gago took over at Boca Juniors, where he experienced a turbulent tenure filled with high expectations and mixed results. His time at the club lasted only 197 dayy, making it the the shortest managerial stint during Juan Román Riquelme’s time in charge of the team’s sporting board.

During his spell at Boca, Gago managed 30 matches with a win rate of 63.3%, recording 17 wins, 6 draws, and 7 losses. Despite those numbers, early elimination from the Copa Libertadores and a defeat in the Superclásico against River Plate led to his premature departure.

Now at Necaxa, Gago has a fresh opportunity to rebuild his coaching reputation and make an impact in Liga MX once again.
