Fernando Hierro in line to take over as Chivas Sporting Director

After the departure of Ricardo Peláez as Sporting Director of Chivas, the list of possible replacements continues to grow. Earlier this week, the likes of Álvaro Dávila, Luis Miguel Salvador, Guillermo Cantú, Duilio Davino and Gerardo Terrado were all linked with the position with the latest person linked with the role coming from overseas in the shape of Fernando Hierro.
Sources close to the Chivas boardroom maintain that the former Real Madrid captain is indeed one of the candidates being considered and contact between the Spaniard and the club has already begun.
As a player, Fernando Hierro was a key figure in recent Real Madrid history. He made his LaLiga debut with Valladolid in 1987, but two years later he joined ‘Los Blancos’, where he remained until 2003. There he coincided with the Mexican striker Hugo Sánchez and won the Champions League three times (1998, 2000 and 2002) and with the Spanish national team went to three World Cups. Italy 1990, United States 1994 and France 1998.
He has experiencing working with the Spanish FA and second division side Málaga where he worked for a year 2011-2012 both in a sporting director capacity.
The 54-year-old was also Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at Real Madrid in 2014 and managed Real Oviedo in 2016. Hierro was also forced to take charge of the Spain team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia when Lopetegui was sacked and oversaw “La Roja’s” Round of 16 exit to host nation Russia on penalty kicks.
