Fernando Ortiz received a two-match suspension for being involved in a fight with Nicolás Larcamón during Week 13 Clausura 2023 game against León. The América coach lost his temper when challenging the visiting coach at the Azteca - and as a result, he was sent off and handed a ban by the Disciplinary Commission.

Ortiz confessed that he will learn from the experience, promising that it won’t happen again. He revealed that he has not spoken about the incident with club management but stressed it is not the image that he wants to give.

I have spoken very little with the directive that is the reality. I am very grateful to the fans, but this is something that shouldn’t happen, it is not the image I want as a coach. It will not happen again. On my part, I have to control my personal emotions and keep my feelings out on the field of play” he said.

Regarding the suspension imposed by the Disciplinary Committee , Tano added: “I was sent off, and when that happens, I need to understand and know that there must have been an infraction of mine in some way. At the same time I am calm knowing that I have acted in the best way I could”.

Regarding América’s next game, against Monterrey on Saturday, Ortiz said that he expects a “beautiful game” in which he hopes his side will take all three points to consolidate their position in the Liga MX table. The team is currently fourth on 24 points, 10 points behind the leaders.

Ortiz insists his side have nothing to fear from Monterrey who, like América, have lost just one game in the Clausura 2023. “At the beginning or at the end of the tournament we had to face them. As it turns out we meet at the end of the tournament and facing them implies having the same concentration as in the first round, that is a reality. We will prepare for Saturday’s game, knowing that we are taking on the leaders and hopefully enjoy a nice game,” he said.

What games will Ortiz miss?

With the two-match ban, the Argentine coach will not be able to be on the bench for the game against Monterrey on Saturday and will also miss the Clásico Joven against Cruz Azul on 15 April.
