Fernando Ortíz will be Rayados’ 13th Argentine coach

Monterrey have a history of hiring Argentinian coaches - a formula which has worked in the past with Daniel Pasarella and Antonio Mohamed guiding the team to the title.

Once again, Monterrey will have placed their faith in an Argentinean coach. Fernando Ortíz will take the reins, tasked with healing recent wounds as quickly as possible and get the team back on track for the upcoming Apertura 2023.

It’s a formula which has worked out well for the club in the past - the last time the team had a strategist from Argentina, Antonio Mohamed in 2019, they were crowned champions. Now the directive is hoping that history might repeat itself.

In almost 78 years of history, Rayados have boasted number of Argentinean coaches. The first was José Noguera, who arrived in the 1945/46 season, the institution’s inaugural year in Mexican Soccer.

Other Argentine coaches would join the Sultana del Norte including: Héctor Uzal, Mario Imbelloni, José Gómez, Enrique Álvarez Vega, Alberto Etcheverry, Filpo Núñez and Pedro Dellacha - all of them in the old days, the long tournament era.

Since the short tournament format was introduced in 1996, four Argentineans have occupied the Monterrey bench: Eduardo Solari, Daniel Pasarella, Ricardo La Volpe and Antonio Mohamed.

El Kaiser Pasarella deserves a special mention because he was the one who led the blue and whites to glory in the Clausura 2003 - quite a feat as it was Rayados’ first title since 1986.

Ortiz’s arrival...

‘Tano’ Ortiz’s arrival is expected by the end of the week. Some claim that he will arrive on Sunday to sign his contract, be officially presented and get straight down to work.
