Ferretti reiterates anti-América stance: “I’d rather retire than coach them”
The 69-year-old explained that his roots and allegiance to other clubs mean that he is unable to support the Azulcremas.
At a time when his career as in coaching has declined - to the point where he is now working as an analyst for ESPN, the controversial technical director Ricardo Ferretti once again displayed his anti-América stance, stating that he would rather retire from the game completely than accept an offer to coach the Águilas.
Ferretti made his point of view clear during a roundtable discussion the Futbol Picante program, explaining that his university roots simply do not allow him the possibility of ever sitting on the bench of the Coapa team.
No chance
Ahead of this week’s grand final between América and Tigres, Tuca was quizzed by fellow pundit Héctor Huerta about whether he would consider the possibility of taking the América job, to which the Brazilian coach replied, “I prefer Tigres. Look, I’m going to say one thing: I’d rather retire from all football than coach América, period. So to answer your question - never”.
During the discussion, the 69-year-old admitted that the rivalry between the capital squad and the northern team can now be considered a new classic in Mexican soccer.

During his playing days, Ferretti starred in two finals for Pumas against América. He lost the 1984-85 final but won the 1990-91 final - his rocketshot free-kick from 30 yards out deciding it in spectacular style.
Years later, as coach, his Tigres side beat América to clinch the Apertura 2016.
