FIFA announces major rules changes for the 2026 World Cup: Here’s what’s new
World football’s organizing body has introduced a series of new rules to combat time-wasting and help games run quicker and smoother.

This week FIFA unveiled five key rule changes that will have a direct impact how this summer’s tournament is played. The changes have been brought in to curb time-wasting and make the game flow more efficiently.
FIFA is keen to cut down unnecessary delays which slow games down and kill momentum. From now on, substituted players will no longer be able to trudge slowly off the field to run down the clock - their team will face a penalty if they take their time leaving the field of play.
One of the most interesting updates involves the use of VAR. For the first time, video review officials will be allowed to intervene on yellow‑card decisions to help prevent unfair red‑card situations.

Five new rules for the 2026 World Cup
FIFA will implement five major changes for the 2026 tournament. Players and coaches will need to adapt quickly — ignoring these rules could cost teams dearly.
1. Timed substitutions
A substituted player will have 10 seconds to leave the field. If they take longer, the incoming player must wait one full minute before entering, leaving their team temporarily a man down.
2. Time limits on restarts
Goal kicks and throw‑ins must be taken within five seconds. If a team exceeds the limit, possession will be handed to the opposing team.
3. Medical attention off the field
Except in cases involving a yellow‑card foul, any player requesting medical treatment must remain off the field for one minute while being evaluated, with the sole exception being injuries caused by a foul that led to a card for an opposing player.
4. Only the team captain is allowed to approach the referee
Only the team captain is allowed to protest or question a referee’s decision. Any other player who approaches the match official risks an immediate yellow card. This is stop players crowding refs to protest or intimidate.
5. Expanded VAR authority
VAR officials can now review second yellow cards which result in a player being sent off, as well as incorrectly awarded corner kicks.
This gives video review a broader role in preventing game‑changing mistakes.

When does the 2026 World Cup start?
