Finalissima breakthrough: When and where will Spain play Argentina?
Confirmation of the 2026 Finalissima, played between the champions of Europe and South America, is thought to be imminent.
Argentina has finally given the definitive green light to face Spain in the Finalissima, clearing the way for the event to be officially announced. One of Argentina’s most reputable journalists, Gastón Edul, has reported that confirmation of the game is imminent. AS was also able to confirm the news.
Finalissima 2026 - date and venue:
The showdown between Argentina, the reigning champions of South America, and Spain, the champions of Europe, will be held on March 27 in Doha, Qatar.
All parties involved (the Spanish Soccer Federation, UEFA, and CONMEBOL) were aligned, except for the Argentinian Soccer Association, whose delay held up the official confirmation.
Turmoil within the Argentine federation - including a judicial investigation and a reported rift between the coaching staff and the leadership - had complicated the situation. The legal issues surfaced at the worst possible moment.
Argentina to return to scene of World Cup win
Qatar, which celebrates its National Day on December 18, wants to use this week to announce with fanfare the match between Argentina and Spain, which will be played at Lusail Stadium, the same venue that hosted the Albiceleste’s 2022 World Cup final win over France.
In addition to the Finalissima, Spain and Argentina will each play a friendly in Doha during next March’s international break.
Argentina will face Qatar, while Luis de la Fuente’s side will take on Egypt. These two fixtures will also be confirmed at the same time as the Finalissima becomes official.
