Finalissima called off

UEFA confirms that it has not been possible to reach an agreement with Argentina on an alternative date.

There will be no Finalissima. Unbelievable, but true. After a final virtual meeting between UEFA and CONMEBOL, with the Argentine FA (AFA) and the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) also present, the match that was supposed to pit European champion Spain against South American champion Argentina has been canceled.

The drastic decision comes after it proved impossible to stage the game in Doha, Qatar, on March 27 as originally planned, due to security concerns stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. It also follows a failure to reach agreement between the South American and European sides on a new venue, creating a remarkable institutional deadlock.

UEFA confirmed the bad news in a lengthy statement explaining the process that ultimately led to the suspension.

Following intensive discussions between UEFA and the organizing authorities in Qatar, it was announced today that, due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima between Spain, winner of Euro 2024, and Argentina, CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 champion, will not be played in Qatar on March 27 as originally planned.

It is a major disappointment for UEFA and the organizers that the circumstances and timing have deprived the teams of the opportunity to compete for this prestigious trophy in Qatar, a country that has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to host top-level international events in state-of-the-art facilities.

UEFA also expressed its deep gratitude to the organizing committee and the relevant authorities in Qatar for their efforts to host the match and voiced its hope that peace will soon return to the region.

The Finalissima was introduced as part of the close collaboration between UEFA and CONMEBOL and brings together the champions of Europe and South America in a celebration of international soccer at the highest level. Argentina, the current world champion, won the inaugural edition in 2022 with a 3–0 victory over Italy at Wembley Stadium in London.

Determined to save the match, and despite the understandable difficulties of relocating such a high-profile event at short notice, UEFA explored other viable alternatives. All of them, however, were ultimately rejected by the Argentine Football Association.

The first option was to stage the match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on the original date, with a 50–50 split of supporters inside the stadium. The venue would have provided a world-class setting befitting an event of this stature, but Argentina declined.

The second proposal was to play the Finalissima over two legs: one at the Santiago Bernabéu on March 27 and another in Buenos Aires during an international window ahead of the 2028 European Championship and Copa América. The Madrid match would again have featured a 50–50 fan distribution. This option was also rejected.

Finally, UEFA asked Argentina to commit to playing the match on March 27, as originally scheduled and announced on December 18, 2025, or on the alternative date of March 30 if a neutral venue in Europe could be found. That proposal was also rejected.

Argentina then submitted a counterproposal to play the match after the World Cup, but Spain has no available dates in its schedule, forcing that option to be discarded. Ultimately, and contrary to the original plan for the match to be played on March 27, Argentina declared itself available only on March 31, a date that proved unworkable.

As a result, and much to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been canceled.

UEFA also expressed its sincere thanks to Real Madrid CF, as well as the organizing committee and authorities in Qatar, for their support and cooperation in the attempt to stage the match. In Real Madrid’s case, those efforts were made with extremely short notice. UEFA also thanked the Spanish Football Federation for its flexibility throughout the process as it adapted to each of the proposed solutions.
