Financial Fair Play will not force PSG to sell Kylian Mbappé: contract details revealed

The French club, despite huge expenditures, will not suffer any repercussions from Financial Fair Play rules.

Update:
The French club has amassed a huge debt, partly as a result of the monstrous wage of Kylian Mbappé.

PSG’s financial accounts all check out, at least for the French football authorities. The DNCG, in charge of the accounts of all Ligue 1 clubs, published a report in which they communicated that the team owned by QSI, along with Monaco, Nantes and Marseille, had all passed the annual inspection without any issues.

During last season, the French champions racked up a whopping €369 million deficit, a record for the league, but will not suffer any FFP consequences. The DNCG’s only obligation for the inspection is to demand that all clubs guarantee enough liquidity to be able to mitigate their financial losses. PSG, thanks to the Qatari investment, only had to activate the institutional mechanism to increase their capital; as their funding from Qatar Sports Investment has a pretty much unlimited amount of money in reserve, there was then no problem regarding their books.

Will PSG be forced to sell Mbappé?

The exits of Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos have come as something of a relief for the club, whose wage bill had risen to €729 million per year, an historic figure in European football. Given the green light that PSG have now been given by French football, they are under no financial obligation to sell their biggest assets, that is, Kylian Mbappé, even if his contract did suppose a problem for UEFA’s FFP.

Newly laid-out regulations of Europe’s top governing body in football, which will come into play as of next season, mean that this counterweight strategy to the insane investment levels by PSG will no longer be able to be used. Any club that is a part of UEFA will not be allowed to spend over 70% of their annual investment on the squad, the wage bill of the squad, the cost of transfers and agent commissions. PSG, for now, have managed to save themselves, and will be able to invest without any problems, despite UEFA keeping a close eye on their summer dealings this year.

How much money does Mbappé earn?

Mbappé's contract is worth €72 million per year without taking into account the ‘loyalty bonus’, which also counts towards FFP, but that the club have managed to work their way around it. The French forward will pocket €70 million if he stays in Paris, a figure that will rise to €80 million in 2024 and €90 million in 2025.

The next few weeks will be decisive for PSG who still do not know whether or not Mbappé will wear navy blue next season. The player, meanwhile, sees his future in the final year of his current contract with the club, while those at the top have decided the opposite: that if he does not renew he will be sold. It is a game of poker and for now, nobody is placing any cards on the table.
