Game developers Electronic Arts have released the first teaser trailer from the hotly-anticipated new game, EA Sports FC 24.

The upcoming title will be the first iteration of EA’s iconic football franchise since the company split from the sport’s governing body FIFA. Since the release of ‘FIFA International Soccer’ in 1993 more than 100 million copies of the series have been sold but EA’s flagship football game will now be renamed.

On Monday gamers got a first glimpse of the new-look game, in the form of a teaser trailer released by the developer.

The 86-second video features no actual gameplay but the footage is rendered using the frostbite engine that will be used for the game, giving players an idea of what’s in store.

FC24 release date

Now that players have had a taste of what is to come they will be eager to get their hands on the upcoming game. However the release of the first ‘FC’ gaming title is still some way away.

The teaser trailer dropped on Monday 10 July, ahead of the release of the full reveal on Thursday 13 July.

An official release date for the game has not yet been confirmed but numerous online reports suggest that FC 24 will be released on 29 September. This would be in line with the previous releases, which typically arrived in late September or early October.

In the past EA have given fans the option to purchase a special edition pre-order version of the game, giving them access a week earlier. EA have not confirmed whether that will also be the case for this edition.

Why isn’t it called FIFA 24?

The 30-year partnership with FIFA finally comes to an end with this year’s edition.

The New York Times reported last year that the lucrative tie-in would not be extended beyond the 2022/23 season after the two companies failed to agree a renewal.

In the past FIFA reportedly earnt around $150 million per year from EA Sports for the rights to use the organisation’s official branding. However when the deal came up for renewal last year FIFA were looking to double the amount that it receives from its biggest commercial partner.

The most recent contract between EA Sports and FIFA was signed in 2012 and a lot has changed in the intervening decade. With a new name on the horizon, fans will be eager to see whether the next big change will be for the better.
