After Wrexham had won promotion to English Football League Two, their owners, Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, cheekily attempted to persuade former Real Madrid attacker Gareth Bale, who retired in January this year after a spell in MLS with LAFC, to turn out for the Welsh club.

McElhenney and Reynolds attempts to persuade Bale on Twitter

McElhenney was first to try to put the moves on the former Wales international on Twitter, re-posting a video of Bale congratulating Wrexham on their promotion to the fourth tier of English soccer, along with the following message: “Hey @GarethBale let’s play golf, where I totally won’t spend 4 hour trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season”.

After Bale had teased the actor with a “Depends what course” response, Reynolds also got involved in the conversation: “I will shave a professional-grade golf course into Rob’s back if you’ll give Wrexham a season”.

It surely wasn’t too much to ask of Bale, was it? After all, he retired from soccer at the young age of 33 and was turning out for Real Madrid as recently as April last year.

Bale making up for ‘lost time’

The former Tottenham Hotspur man, however, quashed the ‘rumours’ at the FEVO Sport Industry Awards 2023: No I don’t think so. I was more looking for a free round of golf off Rob!

“I’m sure we’ll have a chat and a joke but I’m quite happy where I am. I’m spending a fair bit of time with my kids and my wife. Time I’ve lost so much of over the years being committed to football. So I’m just enjoying family life and playing some golf”. And just like that, Reynolds and McElhenney’s dream is over.
