Former Real Madrid star James Rodríguez in talks for shock MLS move

MLS team Minnesota United are reportedly in talks to sign James Rodríguez as the Colombia captain searches for regular game time ahead of the World Cup.

Minnesota played their first MLS season in 2017 and are yet to win any major silverware. Signing Rodríguez would be, by some distance, the biggest signing in the team’s brief history. Nevertheless, it’s a move that could benefit all involved.

Rodríguez starred with the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in Europe before signing with Mexican team Leon in 2025. His stint in Liga MX was short-lived and he now finds himself without a club.

Now 34, Rodríguez is still a key player for the Colombia national team but needs regular soccer to prepare for this summer’s World Cup. Minnesota are in need of a creative player and recently lost Robin Lod, the team’s most important midfielder in recent years.

In terms of pure ability, Rodríguez would represent a clear upgrade on any player in the Minnesota squad and would reflect the promised change in style under new coach Cameron Knowles.

Former head coach Eric Ramsey led the team to impressive finishes in the Western Conference but imposed a direct, set piece-focused style of play that alienated some supporters. If a deal can be agreed, the arrival of James Rodríguez would represent an exciting new era for the Loons.
