Former US coach on USMNT-Mexico clash: “I can’t remember a more underwhelming game”
Mexico and the United States tied 1-1 in a friendly match held in Arizona with former USA national team coach Hérculez Gómez far from impressed.
The United States managed to snatch a late draw with Mexico through a late Jesus Ferreira strike in a match in which for most of the contest, Diego Cocca’s El Tri side enjoyed the better of the game and will feel they should have claimed a win in the inaugural ‘Continental Clasico’ staged in Arizona.
The game was far from a classic and former USMNT head coach Hérculez Gómez made his feelings clear as he took to social media at the conclusion of the “underwhelming” contest.
“Tactically and technically, a terrible display for both the United States and Mexico” were the words that Gómez wrote on his Twitter account also pointing out that “I can’t remember a more underwhelming game between the two”.
Criticism of Serginho Dest
With the game falling outside the FIFA international window, both coaches were forced to call upon home grown players with one of the few exceptions being AC Milan’s Serginho Dest who is out of favour with the Serie A side and was allowed by his club to travel to the US for the game.
“I don’t think I’ve seen Sergiño Dest with that mistrust since the 2019 game in New Jersey against Mexico. It’s something very bad, understandable, but too worrying,” added Hérculez after the match between both teams.
Dest, did however, redeem his performance to some extent late on as he provided the pass to Jordan Morris that led to the Seattle Sounders player feeding Ferreira for the 81st minute equaliser to deny El Tri a win with Mexico now failing to beat the US in their past five meetings.
