France 3-1 Poland: as it happened

France beat Poland to set up quarter-final clash

France booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup with a 3-1 win over Poland on Sunday.

Olivier Giroud became France’s all-time top scorer after he opened the scoring with a neat finish following a through-ball from Kylian Mbappé.

Mbappé then doubled the lead with a superb strike that fizzed past Wojciech Szczesny after some nice play between Giroud and Ousmane Dembélé on the right.

The France forward became the top scorer at the World Cup when he bagged a brace soon after, with a curling effort into the top corner to put the game to bed.

Robert Lewandowski scored from the spot with the last kick of the game to give Poland a consolation.

France will now play either England or Senegal in the quarter-finals.

He goes for the little dance again, sends Lloris one way, and calmly slots it home, going to his left.

Lewandowski scores this time!

It's going to be taken again!

Lloris is off his line.

It's a terrible penalty! Lloris dives to his left and stops it.

Mbappé brace

It's two for Mbappé and three for France.

Mbappé is unplayable.

He opens up his body and curls it into the far top corner after receiving a pass from Thuram.

Szczesny gets a touch but there is so much power on it.

Mbappé makes it 3-0!

Giroud and Mbappé have four goals each and are the top scorers in this tournament.

Cash gets a yellow for a foul on Thuram.

France lead 2-0.

Poland changes

OFF Jakub Kiwior

ON Jan Bednarek

OFF Przemyslaw Frankowski

ON Kamil Grosicki

Antoine Griezmann has been superb in that deeper role for France. France's experience will help them win games like this.

Two moments of brilliance have seen France carve Poland open. Giroud's opener was a superb finish. Mbappé followed it up with an even better goal.

Poland have it all to do now. They are two goals down with 10 to go.

ON Nicola Zalewski

OFF Grzegorz Krychowiak

ON Krystian Bielik

Upamecano shoves Lewandowski off the ball.

Poland have a free. Lewandowski lets a roar out to let his team-mates know they are still in this one.

Poland have not made this easy for France. A Lewandowski goal is still a possibility. They haven't carved France open as often in this second half but there is still plenty of time remaining.

Tchouaméni hasn't been at his best today, perhaps that early yellow card was playing on his mind.

France change

OFF Aurelién Tchouaméni

ON Youssouf Fofana

Poland change

OFF Sebastian Szymanski

ON Arkadiusz Milik

Mbappé nutmegs Kiwior on the 18-yard line. The defender keeps him out with some contract. Mbappé wants a free but the play is waved on.

Giroud is now among seven players to have scored three goals at this World Cup.

He's about to pull the trigger but Szymanski robs it off him.

Mbappé x Giroud

It's a wonderful finish by Giroud but it's been ruled out.

France 1-0 Poland

Giroud scores an acrobatic overhead kick but the whistle had already been blown.

Szczesny and Cash are both on the ground after a collision in the air involving Varane.

He shoots from outside the box. The effort is deflected just wide. Glik stands big to block the shot.

Poland are camped in their own half as Les Bleus look to double their lead. Dembélé tries to play in Koundé on the right but Poland are able to cope.

France hit Poland on the break through Mbappé. He slides in Rabiot, whose low left-footed cross is cleared. That's good defending by Poland. 1-0

Poland's first-half display was much better than their performance against Argentina. They had their chances and are still very much in this game.

If you're just joining us now, France lead 1-0.

Griezmann hits the target with the free-kick.

Szczesny punches it away.

Dembélé stays onside but is fouled by Bereszynski. The replay shows he gets the ball. Bereszynski gets a yellow card.

I have no changes to report at the break.

France top scorers

Henry - 51 goals

Giroud is definitely underrated!

HT: France 1-0 Poland

Poland have played well and have looked like scoring but Giroud has Les Bleus in front, with one foot in the World Cup quarter-finals.

France have underperformed but have taken the lead thanks a goal from their all-time top scorer.

It's Giroud's 52nd goal for France!

Mbappé plays him in and he gets it out of his feet and puts it into the far corner, giving Szczesny no chance. Mbappé with the assist.

It's a wonderful finish and he becomes France's all-time top scorer.

Koundé is about to take the throw-in, but...

His gold chain has been spotted and needs to be removed!

How has he been able to wear a gold chain for 42 minutes at a World Cup?

You don't get away with that at Sunday League football!

This Poland side is unrecognisable from the one battered by Argentina in midweek.

Poland's shots on target

Poland stat:

- 5 shots on target in entire tournament before today

- 4 shots on target already in this first half

Off the line!

Lloris saves the first effort from Zielinski and the second shot is cleared off the line by Varane.

France get away with one there.

France have a corner. It falls to Giroud, who bicycle-kicks it back into the area. Szczesny is bundled over by Upamecano and Poland have a free out.

Cash scored for Poland against the Netherlands in the Nations League in June.

Poland work it nicely through the thirds.

It eventually makes it way to Cash on the right. The Aston Villa man sees his name in lights and pulls it well wide.

Lewandowski hits the free-kick low and into the French wall. It's still 0-0.

Frankowski is fouled. Tchouaméni is booked for it.

How has he missed!?

Dembélé picks him out at the back post. He slides in to connect with it but can't hit the back of the net as the goal is gaping.

It's Glik's 103rd appearance for Poland today. He once plied his trade with Real Madrid C.

Mbappé looks at himself on the big screen. He's not happy. 0-0

Poland have been more positive today. It couldn't really get more negative than the Argentina game. They may have woken up to the fact that they're in a World Cup.

Varane's 90th cap

Koundé shoots!

It's straight at Szczesny. The Barcelona defender gets it out of his feet and fancied a pop as he was in acres of space.

He finds himself 25 yards out and fires wide with his left foot. It's a good effort. He was looking to add to his one World Cup goal.

Poland keep France out

With 20 minutes gone it remains 0-0.

It's definitely not a packed house at the Al-Thumama stadium.

Giroud is only one shy of becoming his country’s all-time leading goalscorer as he currently stands level with Thierry Henry on 51.

Dembélé comes inside and heads towards goal. His effort is low and it's an easy one for Szczesny.

Poland have a brief spell of possession but it's back with France now and Griezmann plays in Giroud but there's just too much on the pass.

Lloris equals Thuram's record

The France midfielder shoots from 25 yards. He hits it well but  Szczesny gets down to his right and parries it away.

Poland are under pressure but have dealt with the French threat so far. 0-0

Dembélé shoots on goal and wins another corner.

Griezmann goes short from the corner this time and it's recycled right back into the French backline.

Mbappé beats Cash down the left and it's headed out for a corner.

Griezmann's corner is eventually punched away by Szczesny, who will be in a confident mood after saving Messi's penalty in midweek.

If Poland approach this like they did against Argentina, they will be in trouble.

France will be a threat in the air with Varane and Giroud. Varane is back for the French side after sustaining an injury with Manchester United in October.

Dembélé gets a yard of space and crosses. He wins a corner. Griezmann curls it in but Varane heads it wide.

Bereszynski takes Griezmnann out and it's a free for France.

Griezmann overhits the inswinging free from the right. Poland have an early goalkick.

France get us underway!

Les Bleus are playing in their traditional colours from left to right.

Deschamps has brought his heavyweights back into the side for this one.

Deschamps rung the changes for France’s final Group D match on Wednesday, which they lost 1-0 to Tunisia.

Kylian Mbappé, Olivier Giroud, Hugo Lloris, Ousmane Dembélé and Antoine Griezmann were among the players who dropped to the bench for that loss.

The captains, Lloris and Lewandowski, shake hands and call heads or tails.

And now for the Poland national anthem

The teams have made their way out onto the pitch and it's time for the national anthems, starting with the France one

Mbappé's record with France

Kylian Mbappé:

Age: 23

Caps: 62

Goals: 31

He's unplayable at times. Matty Cash could be busy today.

Griezmann key

Playing in a deeper role for Les Bleus,Griezmann can continue his fine form in knockout matches.

Poland warm up

Szczesny was proud of saving Messi's penalty in Poland's final Group C game in midweek.

France assistant breaks Poland down

French assistant coach, Guy Stéphan, gave his take on Poland ahead of the game.

"They have a lot of big players. There are two players who are very well known. Szczęsny, the goalkeeper who has made great saves since the competition began and saved a penalty. Lewandowski has 136 caps and 77 goals. A player who has played with Barca and Bayern," he told FFF TV.

"We obviously know of Poland, but they are a team we do not play often. The last match was under the watch of Laurent Blanc. It was in 2011 more than 11 years ago. It was a match France won 1-0.

"Poland is a team that can obviously move the ball, but they look to play the ball long to Lewandowski. From there they are not a team who like to always have the ball. In their first three matches against Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Argentina they have averaged around 35-40% possession of the ball.

"They utilise rapid transition and are capable of making the difference without the ball. Pressing high, but on defense they tend to crowd the middle also. Often they will line up in a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1… but can also play in a 5-3-2 and play very dense and tight."

Poland's possible XI vs France

Szczęsny; Cash, Glik, Kiwior, Bereszyński; Frankowski, Bielik, Krychowiak, Zieliński; Lewandowski, Milik.

France's possible starting XI vs Poland

This is how Deschamps could set up today:

Lloris; Koundé, Varane, Upamecano, T Hernandez; Tchouaméni, Rabiot; Dembélé, Griezmann, Mbappé, Giroud.
