Frenkie de Jong taken off injured in El Clásico
The Barcelona midfielder was taken off the Bernabéu pitch on a stretcher in the first half against Real Madrid.
Frenkie de Jong was stretchered off with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury near the end of the first half of the Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona at the Bernbéu.
De Jong was injured challenging for a loose ball with Madrid player Valverde. Their feet collided in midair with De Jong’s foot flying back from the impact on his instep, awkwardly twisting the foot and and apparently damaging the ankle.
The Dutch player was treated on the pitch and eventually managed to get to his feet, but was unable to walk off the pitch and was put onto a stretcher and taken off the pitch. He was visibly distraught and in tears. The injury is to the same ankle he had previously injured this season.
De Jong was given an ovation by the Bernabéu as he was stretchered off.
Substitution for De Jong
Pedri was brought in as a substitute for the injured De Jong.
Medical report on De Jong’s injury
So far Barcelona have not released a report on De Jong’s injury, however the news filtering out of the Barcelona dressing room is not promising. The possibility he will miss the rest of the season cannot be ruled out, including the possibility that his participation in the European Championships could be in doubt. A medical report is not expected until Monday.
