From Yankee Stadium to Etihad Park: The current and future venues for New York City Football Club
New York City FC is planning a move to their own stadium next summer but for now they are sharing a home with one of the most historic teams in the world.
Today the bases are swapped out for corner flags. The diamond has been converted into a rectangle and we won’t have umps, we will have referees at Yankee Stadium. Wrexham and Liverpool will meet for a preseason friendly at the historic stadium, but this is nothing new for soccer fans in the five boroughs.
Special visit at Yankee Stadium
New York City FC have made Yankee Stadium their home for the last decade. Since 2015 they have shared a stadium with the winningest team in MLB history although they have played some of their games in the New York Mets’ Citi Field since 2022.
While NYCFC isn’t the only club in New York (New York Red Bulls), it is the only one located within the five boroughs of New York City. They have made the Bronx, where Yankee Stadium is located, their home despite the pitch dimensions being limited because of the diamond shape of the stadium. It is the smallest pitch allowed by international rules, but the days of playing on such a restricted pitch are coming to an end.
Little by little the club has been inching their way towards their new home in Queens. Citi Field is right across the street from the soon-to-be opened Etihad Park which will be the new permanent home of NYCFC. If the name rings a bell, that’s because the club is owned by the same group that owns Manchester City, who play at Etihad Stadium in the Premier League.
New home for New York FC
Etihad Park is set to open in July of 2027. It will be a 25,000 seat, soccer specific stadium in Willets Point, Queens. The cost of the project is rounding out at about $780 million, and will not just house NYCFC, but will also be the home of Gotham FC of the NWSL.
Today NYCFC and the Yankees will open their doors to a couple of International guests as Wrexham and Liverpool play a preseason friendly at Yankee Stadium. There are some Premier League clubs that have played at Yankee Stadium recently, but this will be the first time Liverpool plays at Yankee Stadium since the 1950s.
NYCFC will be back under their own roof this weekend when they take on Toronto FC on Saturday the 1st of August. They are currently fifth in the Eastern Conference with 25 points in 17 matches, and looking to close out their era at Yankee Stadium with a second league title.
