Fulham - Manchester United, live online: Garnacho last minute winner, summary, stats, highlights, Premier League 2022/23
Fulham - Manchester United: as it happened
FT: Fulham 1-2 Manchester United
A crazy end to a crazy game, but the winner was not for the team who most deserved it. Fulham will be terribly disappointed that they have come away with nothing there as they went toe to toe with Manchester United for 89 minutes and their game plan worked to near perfection.
The away side huffed and puffed, showing momentary flashes of skill and attacking intent but apart from the goals, they never put Leno under any form of sustained pressure.
Fulham, on the other hand, will be throwing darts at cardboard cutouts of David De Gea (my player of the match), as the Spaniard kept his side in the game on multiple occasions with some fantastic reflex saves.
And it was the young Argentinian Alejandro Garnacho who came on and ran around like a lively puppy before managing to sneak his customary goal in right at the end. Remember his name, it seems.
Well, that's it for the Premier League until after Christmas and, more importantly, until after the World Cup!
OK, everyone, that's all from me tonight!
Thank you for following the action and I'll be back for the World Cup in just 7 (seven) days!
Head over to the main page where we will bring you all the best of the post-match reaction and all the latest news.
Ten Hag post-match
Ten Hag on Garnacho: "It is a big skill he has (arrogance/self-confidence), don't over act on it but that is what you need at the top and perform under stress."
"He shows the mentality, has the impact and belief. Twice in four days. I'm really happy we can bring a young player. That is the first one, we have to bring more.
(Quotes from journalist @ShamoonHafez on Twitter)
OK, here you go...
Everything you need to know about Alejandro Garnacho, because you asked so nicely.
Good news for Man Utd fans.
What a player. Although he looks incredibly angry in this photo.
Match reaction coming up...
And that's all! Game over!
GOOOOOOAAALLLLLLL GARNACHO IN THE LAST MINUTE
The man of the moment!
He receives the ball on the left wing and plays it inside to Eriksen. Instead of stopping, the Argentinian winger runs towards goal just in time for his teammate to play the ball back to him in the box. His finish slipped under Leno and that is heartbreaking for Fulham who definitely deserved more.
Fulham change
OFF: Cairney
ON: Onomah
3 minutes added on.
Pereira is down holding his face. Looks like Rashford made contact.
He's fine. Walked into Rashford's shoulder because he wasn't looking where he was going.
One minute of normal time to go... will we see a late winner?
Dan James is very fast.
A hugely exciting run down the right from him but his cross is cleared.
Fulham now looking to draw Manchester United on by keeping the ball. They are probing with passes into midfield before pulling back the yo-yo and the away side just creep further and further out of their safety zone...
Wow, Eric ten Hag absolutely crushed that water bottle with his hand as he was drinking it. Supreme strength. And anger.
GOOD CHANCE FOR MCTOMINAY
Garnacho plays it to Shaw who made an overlapping run. He puts a lovely ball in and the Scot, born in Lancaster, heads over.
A few attempts at a cross from Bruno on the right side but he looks utterly depressed and ends up launching it out the other side.
25 crosses for Fulham, according to the very lovely boffins over at SofaScore.
They've also had more possession (53/47) and more shots (13/11).
Garnacho has made an instant impact as he immediately looks like the only player who wants to win the match for Manchester United.
He is giving them an outlet down the left and is definitely somebody Fulham need to keep their eye on. The kid is trickier to pin down than an angry squirrel.
The referee is listening in his ear...
NO PENALTY
Penalty shout for Man Utd...
Garnacho brought down by Bobby Reid
Man Utd make a change
OFF: Martial
ON: Garnacho
DE GEA SAVE!
Palhinha tries an overhead kick from the corner and De Gea comes to the rescue again.
Corner to Fulham after Dan James speeds down the right but he waits just too long before putting the cross in, allowing Man Utd to get back in numbers and clear it behind.
Bingo cards out again!
'Bruno looks frustrated and is complaining, but I'm not sure who to' - who had that one?
Boos for Rashford for what the fans must have seen as a dive earlier on. They can't be booing him as a person, he's a lovely chap by all accounts.
We're back playing and Fulham immediately go on the offensive.
Rashford down, holding his head. Didn't look too serious.
Bruno has just been called over to the bench by ten Hag and has received some words of wisdom. He then ran over to McTominay and screamed at him. Fair enough.
The away side can't hold onto the ball for more than a few seconds.
Fulham win it back time and time again and continue to pepper the box with crosses that Man Utd are struggling to deal with.
Fulham look really up for this, they can smell blood... pressing in packs of at least four and the crowd think it's not enough!
Manchester United are on the ropes.
YES THEY CAN!!! GOAL DAN JAMES!!!
Willian plays the ball down the channel to left-back Robinson, and the ex-Man Utd man is waiting at the far post to tap in from close range. Game on!
Half an hour to go - can Fulham get past De Gea?
Fulham make a change
OFF: Wilson
ON: James
Standstill defending from Manchester United. Seriously, like 11 scarecrows on the pitch as Fulham take their structure apart with precise passing. Luckily Lisandro woke out of the collective slumber and cleared the ball away.
Close again from Fulham: Pereira's cross from the right is cleared by Malacia but Willian was sniffing around behind him. Man Utd almost caught out again.
Man Utd sub
OFF: McTominay
ON: Elanga
Wilson crossed the ball in towards the far post, and Vinicius took it down on the spin and smacked it towards goal from a few yards out. Somehow (I have no idea how) De Gea managed to get his body in the way and send it out for a corner.
The corner came in and Tim Ream met the ball with a bullet header. But De Gea was there again and showed some incredible reflexes to palm the ball over. Wow.
AND ANOTHER
WHAT A SAVE FROM DE GEA
BIG CHANCE FOR RASHFORD
Some great play from Man Utd's midfielders comes to nothing after Ream cuts it out.
He plays the ball wide to the right back who immediately loses it and Elanga is played in behind. His shot is saved by Leno and the rebound falls to Rashford, who fails to hit the target.
Good start for the home side, who win an early corner after good movement from Vinicius, who pulls out wide to receive before hitting a cross into Lindelof's chest.
Peep! Off for the second half!
Fulham kicking from right to left.
The players are back out!
Fulham are rightfully disappointed.
They have missed Mitrovic today, that's for sure!
Could the result be a forgone conclusion?
Not a nice stat for Fulham fans...
HT: Fulham 0-1 Manchester United
Despite the scoreline, it will be Fulham who go into the changing room with a more positive attitude.
The home side have pressed like crazy all game and have caused Man Utd some serious problems in build up. They have been confident on and off the ball and look especially dangerous when Willian gets a second to make Malacia look like he's playing a different sport.
But quality and talent normally show in the end and Eriksen's movement coupled with Casemiro's fantastic recovery ability has been the dealbreaker so far.
We will have to wait and see if the same continues in the next 45 minutes but Fulham will definitely think they have a chance tonight.
And there we go - half time!
IT SHOULD BE TWO!
Bruno finds Eriksen from the right as he makes a late run into the box but the Dane fires inches wide. That should be it for now...
One minute added on.
Boos from the fans as Tierney blows for a foul on what looked like a perfect challenge from Palhinha.
A huge man-sandwich for Malacia as he ventures forward before clattering into Tim Ream and Issa Diop.
Willian has been everywhere in this game - are we sure it's the same fella that played for Arsenal?
BIG CHANCE FOR MARTIAL!
A great cross from Shaw comes in and Martial jumps to meet the ball, but his header spins over the goal. He'll be annoyed at that, as he had lost his marker.
Five to go. Fulham will be disappointed that they're behind, I think.
Some sustained pressure from Fulham, here.
They've had a few corners in quick succession and are making poor Malacia look like a nervous nelly. He's just passed the ball out of play without even looking up at his friends on the pitch.
Willian whacks a volley from a corner into the River Thames. Saw his name in lights.
Bruno Fernandes does a great job of running next to an opponent without actually tackling them. I don't know, maybe he's just really polite?
Yellow for Bobby Reid for being a naughty boy and holding onto the shirt of his opposite number.
Willian, again, with good running on the left side (Malacia is having a bit of a tough night so far).
He swings a cross into the box and Vinicius leaps downwards in quite spectacular fashion but only gets a mouthful of mud after he misses the ball.
OFF THE LINE!
Martial manages to find space downthe middle after being supplied by Bruno and pokes a shot under Leno's body, but the goalkeeper makes it back in time to jump on top of the ball.
Save from De Gea!
One of those thunderous Wilson shots from the middle of the pitch is well saved by the Spaniard. Fulham getting joy down both sides of the pitch now.
Ah, nope. Flag up. Good save from De Gea nevertheless after Vinicius got on the end of Pereira's cross from close range.
HUGE CHANCE FOR FULHAM!
Fulham are getting into good spaces but are missing that final touch from an in form striker. Sigh.
CHANCE! RASHFORD
An absolutely wonderful cross from the right lands just where Rashford would like, but the poor lad hits a tame effort into Leno's hands.
Half chance for Fulham as Willian - I'll tell you, he's 34 years old - does well (again) down the left. Out for a corner.
Cleared away.
Manchester United fans singing 'we all hate Leeds [naughty word]'. They know who they're playing, right?
More pressure from Fulham sees Man Utd work the ball all the way back to De Gea, who decides to kick it 60 miles into the air.
GOAL! ERIKSEN!
I am not joking. I was typing 'nothing to comment for now, just had time to take a sip of my zesty drink'. Then, bang.
Cairney loses it to Casemiro with a great challenge on halfway, Eriksen picks up the ball and feeds it down the middle to Martial.
The Frenchman turns 180º and plays it left to Bruno, whose cross to the far post is met by the sliding Dane. Lovely recovery from Casemiro and a great follow-up run from Eriksen. Ten hag will be happy with that.
Ah, my hands!
Another chance for Fulham! The teams have gone from playing ping pong to playing pinball.
The ball bounces around in the box; De Gea doubts whether to come out or not, leading to more confusion. Eventually, a Man Utd defender gets tired of it all and smacks it out for a throw. Breathe.
Ok, give me time to type, guys!
A half chance for Fulham leads to Man Utd getting the ball and booting it 40 yards to Martial, who found space behind the defence but couldn't quite reach the ball. We've got a ping pong match here, folks.
Huge chance for Man Utd!
A great ball down the left finds Rashford who plays it square to Martial. The Frenchman takes a touch (perhaps he should've hit it first time) and makes the save from Leno easier.
One for the bingo card: Manchester United look confused out of possession.
Sometimes they push up and press high, sometimes they look around like lost lambs searching for their friends.
Casemiro falls over in response to being pressed by 35 Fulham players.
This is very intense so far from the home side, who look very confident both on and off the ball in the early stages.
Save from De Gea!
Willian makes good progress sown the left and the ball comes in to Vinicius, whose shot is saved by the Spaniard. Looks like Malacia got a slight touch on it.
Craven Cottage is bouncing, a really impressive noise coming from the fans. Let's see if they can push their team to press like this for 90 minutes.
Both teams struggling to hold the ball, so far.
Fulham pressing very high up, they're already causing Man Utd to resort to booting the ball to nothing.
And we're off!
Man Utd kick us off from right to left. Craven Cottage making a good noise.
Minute of silence impeccably observed by all. Gave me a good chance to look at that Fulham kit, which is a beauty.
Now let's get to the game!
The players are in the tunnel...
And here they come! Cairney and Fernandes holding poppy wreaths that will be placed on the pitch before the minute of silence.
This is your fifteen minute warning!
Go and grab your drinks and snacks because the players are heading off the pitch and down the tunnel now...
World Cup heaven
Since I assume you too have got World Cup fever and can't wait for the tournament to start, here's a link for you to bookmark with all of the squads, fixtures and everything else you could possibly imagine.
No, he says bashfully, no need to thank me.
Get in touch!
I almost forgot to say that you can get in touch with me on Twitter @j4brennan or with @English_AS, where I'll also reply kindly.
Drop me a question. Or a comment. Or just a hello, Joe, how's it going, type thing.
Not long to go...
Just half an hour left!
The other game, Brighton 1-2 Aston Villa, has just finished.
The Reds are in the house (cottage)
Manchester United have arrived for the game. The clock's ticking down nicely now.
Lisandro there with his mate tea. Good man.
No Mitrovic for Fulham
Sad faces all round. Mitrovic - who's out with a foot injury - has broken the stereotype he helped to create of a striker who isn't able to crack it in the top division after shining in the Championship.
See also: Dwight Gayle and Cameron Jerome.
And here's Manchester United's lineup
Looks like a pretty strong eleven from ten Hag.
Fulham starting XI
Here we go! Team news in...
It's shaping up to be a gorgeous evening at Craven Cottage, by the way. 14º and that typical autumn sun that tricks you because it's going to drop away behind the stand in the second half and you'll be freezing for the remainder of the game. Delightful.
The teams should be out in a few moments. It will be interesting to see if there are any World Cup changes made by either of the two managers today. Surely the egos of the players aren't big enough to not want to play...
Yes, I'm looking at you over the top of my glasses, like a knowing school teacher.
In the other Premier League game today, Unai Emery's Aston Villa have just gone 1-2 up against Brighton.
Just over half an hour to go on that one.
Will we see Garnacho today?
Who? I hear you ask.
Well don't worry. Joe has got you covered with this: everything you need to know about Garnacho.
Go check it out - but come back to me for the teams, they should be out soon!
Look away, Fulham fans!
Well, we won't see big Cris on the scoresheet today as he is, ahem, ill.
Still, it doesn't make for pretty reading either way.
The man with the whistle today is Paul Tierney. He’s 41 and from Wigan.
(It sounds like I’m introducing him on Take Me Out; if you don’t know what that is, then lucky you)
Ahoy! Welcome to the live feed of Fulham - Manchester United.
It's Joe here today to guide you through the fun and action in the Premier League's final game before the World Cup.
I'm very excited today as I just realised before coming on that the World Cup is now only 7 (seven) days away!
