Update:

A busy offseason in South Florida continued this week with the confirmation that Germán Berterame will become the latest big-name arrival for Inter Miami.

His signing had been trailed in recent weeks, with Miami believed to have paid the $15 million release clause to prise him away from Mexican giants Monterrey. Berterame will become Miami’s third and final Designated Player, joining Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul.

Berterame may not have the same international name recognition as some of Miami’s other recent signings, but he comes with real pedigree in North American soccer. A physical, technically adept goalscorer, Berterame will ease the burden on an ageing Luis Suárez and add even more fire-power to a stacked Miami roster.

“I’m leaving with a clear conscience, knowing I always gave my all,” Berterame said in a video to Monterrey fans. “This opportunity is all new; it’s a unique and fresh experience at the same time. It was unexpected, but I think it’s going to be a beautiful experience.”

How much is Germán Berterame’s salary with Inter Miami?

In his goodbye video, Berterame revealed that he had previously told sporting director Héctor Lara that he would only leave if an “eye-catching” opportunity came up. He had reportedly been in talks with clubs in Europe but in the end it was the lure of partnering Lionel Messi that proved the bigger draw.

Although now a naturalized Mexican international, Berterame was born in Argentina and played for the Argentinian national team at youth level. The chance to play alongside Messi convinced Berterame to swap Liga MX for MLS.

Of course, Miami will also be offering a healthy compensation package for the 27-year-old. His salary details have not yet been announced but he will likely become one of the highest-paid player in the team.

Inter Miami’s wage bill has been lightened by the retirement of Jordi Alba ($6M per year) and Sergio Busquets ($8.8M per year), while Luis Suárez is playing on a relatively modest non-DP contract ($1.5M per year).

Berterame has been announced as the team’s third Designated Player, meaning that his salary does not count towards the league’s stringent salary cap. His signing will likely be the final move of a very productive offseason for Inter Miami, one that leaves them well-placed to defend their MLS Cup title in 2026.
