Germany vs Japan preview

Germany go into the match vs. Japan as one of the favorite nations to go far in the World Cup, but they are facing a dangerous squad in Japan.

Die Mannschaft, four-time winners of the tournament, will try to equal Brazil’s record of five World Cup titles, but it won’t be an easy task, as, besides Japan, they will face Spain and Costa Rica. Hansi Flick’s men will need to level up, as the Germans have only won one of their last seven games.

Meanwhile, Japan will try to emulate their performance in Russia four years ago, when they had Belgium against the ropes (2-0) in the round of 16 match, although ultimately Robert Martínez’s men came back with three goals to come out on top.

Germany and Japan have never played a competitive game before, but Germany emerged victorious in a 2004 friendly (3-0) and registered a 2-2 draw in an exhibition clash in 2006.

Germany

Hansi Flick won’t be able to call upon the services Marco Reus, who is missing the World Cup through injury. The attacking midfielder also missed Euro 2016, Euro 2020, and the 2014 World Cup. Leroy Sané will miss Wednesday’s game with a knee problem.

The good news for Die Mannschaft is that Niclas Fullkrug, Thomas Müller, and Antonio Rüdiger have recently returned to training and look ready.

Japan

Karou Mitoma and Wataru Endo seem fully recovered and available for coach Hajime Moriyasu.

The Asian squad will see the return of Hidemasa Morita, who has overcome a calf issue and could be in the starting XI. Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu didn’t feature in the last friendly game vs. Canada due to injury but he seems recovered and will likely play from the start.

Germany vs Japan prediction

Both teams love playing at a fast pace and going forward, so it may be a game with a few goals.

Germany has a good history of starting strong in the opening World Cup games, but they have looked shaky in their recent friendlies, while the Samurai Blue have been tipped as one of the darkhorses of the tournament.

Will the underdogs Japan register another shocking result following Argentina’s loss to Saudi Arabia? Well, they have the quality to produce the upset in such an unpredictable competition the World Cup is, but Germany will be fully focused taking into account their 2018 elimination.

Prediction: Germany 2-1 Japan

Who is refereeing Germany vs Japan?

Salvadoran referee Ivan Arcides Barton Cisneros will take charge of the fixture. Alongside him are assistants David Jonathan Morán Santos and Zachari Zeegelaar, while the fourth official is Said Martínez.
