Far from a classic.

A battle of attrition in Getafe and Jose Bordalas gets the result he set out for.

The current LaLiga champions struggled and faced an uphill challenge as Raphinha was awarded a straight red for a petulant forearm smash on a Getafe player as the first half wound down

Getafe were soon down to ten men themselves as Mata was awarded a second yellow for a foul on Balde and despite the introduction of Ansu Fati and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, the visitors were simply off the pace when it came to creating danger on David Soria's goal.

Xavi Hernandez was also carded on a night that would have tormented football purists.

The whistle sounds and it ends 0-0 in Getafe.

Lozano almost secures the win at the end as his header goes wide.

The 105th minute sees Portu go close as Gavi is forced to defend.

What can Barcelona deliver in the second 45? 

The Catalan side need to be cuter in breaking down this Getafe side who are delivering a rendition of Bordalas-ball in taking things to the limits.

The whistle sounds for the break and it's 0-0 at the break in a feisty LaLiga opener in Getafe.

Suarez finds Aleña and the home side start to grow now as they face ten man Barcelona.

Now Araujo does well as he picks up a loose ball and delivers a decent cross but the defenders in blue are level to the task.

Interesting as Araujo fields the ball beautifully but despite catching the ball in the middle of the game, the Uruguayan defender is not carded. 

We're going to have 10 (ten) minutes of added time.

But Getafe's plan of winding up their rival is working.

The Brazilian clearly passing breaking point but nothing can forgive the way he hit out at an opponent.

Graceless from the Getafe bench as five or so backroom staff run onto the pitch and try and apply pressure on the match officials.

The ball almost ends in the back of the Getafe net as a Raphinha shot is saved and the ricochet almost ends in the net from Mitrovic.

The intense heat certainly feels like a factor contributing to the tempo of the game.

Despite their total domination, Barcelona are a little laboured in their build-up with everything just a little too predictable.

Romeu predicts a 'battle'

The new FCB central player who made the short move from Girona in the summer offered his views ahead of the season opener and predicted that the game in Getafe would be a 'battle'.

The former Man City player was only registered this week with LaLiga and will make his debut in Spain's top flight tonight in Getafe.

Getafe travel to Girona as Barcelona welcome Cadiz at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium.

Xavi too has confirmed his team for the clash in Getafe with debuts for Gundogan and Oriol Romeu. 

Raphinha and Lewandowski lead the line for the Catalan side.

Head coach Jose Bordalas has named his team for the first test of the new season. 

Xavi's main complaint for the corresponding fixture last year (which ended 0-0) was the state of the pitch with the coach from Terrassa stating that the pitch was too dry and this hindered his team.  

31C expected at kick-off

The heat in the Spanish capital has been stifling over the past few days but fortunately has dropped slightly for the season opener.

A temperature of 31C/88 F is expected at kick-off with referee Cesar Soto Grado likely to call for two water breaks during the game.

The FCB manager was in a positive frame of mind when speaking to the press ahead of the season opener: "The team is looking confident and feeling good. Of course we have to play a very strong and defensively robust team. It's a very difficult first game, but we'll try to play our way and control the game, and give our best from the off."

"We need a lot of movement and bodies in the area against teams that play with a low block."

Key Getafe absentees

Jose Bordalas starts the new season without four key players and will be without Unal and Luis Milla for time time but despite missing the start of the new campaign, Arambarri and Carmona are expected back soon with both players in the final stages of recovering from their respective injuries.
