Gianluigi Buffon retires at 45

Buffon played 685 games for Italian giants Juventus, winning 22 major trophies along the way.

Gianluigi Buffon has announced his retirement from football at the age of 45.

Buffon has decided to terminate his contract with Italian side Parma after a hugely successful 28-year career.

In 2001, he became the most expensive goalkeeper in the world when he joined Juventus from Parma for €52m.

In the summer of 2018, Buffon signed for PSG on a free transfer from Juventus but only spent a year with Les Parisiens.

Most Serie A appearances

Buffon played 685 times for Italian giants Juventus, winning 22 major trophies along the way. He also retires having made more Serie A appearances (648) than any other player in history.

World Cup winner

World Cup glory came when the shot-stopper helped Italy lift the most-coveted trophy in world football in 2006. Buffon went on to win a record 176 caps for his country.
