Giovanni Reyna’s situation in the final hours of the January transfer window
USMNT player Reyna has 18 months remaining on his current deal with Dortmund.
As the January transfer window gets ready to close, Giovanni Reyna is still a Borussia Dortmund player. Reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio is now reporting that Serie A side Fiorentina have entered the race to sign Reyna, and have opened talks with Dortmund over a potential last-minute move.
USMNT player Reyna has 18 months remaining on his current deal with Dortmund and has been linked with a move to several European clubs, including Marseille and Real Sociedad. Premier League side Nottingham Forest have also shown an interest in the 21-year-old, as recently reported by The Athletic. Fiorentina are interested in sealing a loan deal for the Sunderland-born winger.
Dortmund struggles
Reyna has yet to score a goal or provide an assist for Dortmund this season, with head coach Edin Terzic only handing him two starts in the entire campaign. The arrival of Jadon Sancho on loan from Manchester United means that Reyna was likely to feature even less under Terzic. The form of English talent Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (19) has also seen Reyna pushed further down the pecking order in the attacking department in 2023-24.
The son of former USA midfielder Claudio Reyna is now looking for game time ahead of an important year for the USA. Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT side have two major tournaments in the next three years, starting with the 2024 Copa América this summer and the 2026 World Cup in two and a half years.
