Griezmann close to equalling Cristiano’s LaLiga record
Antoine Griezmann has got off to a strong start to the season with Atlético, playing an active part in three of the team’s five goals so far.
Antoine Griezmann has been decisive for Atlético at the start of the 2024/25 campaign and is now very close to equalling a record set by Cristiano Ronaldo. The French forward set up Marcos Llorente to score the equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Villarreal on the opening day and went one better in the next game against Girona, firing in the opener from a direct free-kick, then supplying Llorente with another assist for the team’s second goal.
Griezmann generosity
With one goal and two assists, Grizzy has played an active part in three of the team’s five goals ahead of tonight’s game against Espanyol at the Metropolitano and takes his personal tally of assists in LaLiga to 92 - just three away from equalling the 95 assists which Cristiano registered with Real Madrid.
Griezmann could edge closer to Cristiano’s record against the Pericos, a game in which Atlético will be looking to maintain their undefeated record.
Griezmann's assists in La Liga
The Frenchman has played more LaLiga games than Cristiano Ronaldo did with Real Madrid. Including tonight’s meeting with Espanyol, Griezmann will have played a total of 495 games, while CR7 racked up 95 assists in 292 league games with Madrid.
Griezmann made his league debut in the opening day of the 2010/11 season in Real Sociedad’s 1-0 home win against Villarreal. His first assist came a couple of games later in Week 3 when he played in Raúl Tamudo. Curiously, Cristiano also ended that game with an assist - inadvertently. His free-kick struck Pepe and was credited to the centre-back in the 1-2 win.
Antoine has played for three different teams in the Spanish top flight: Real Sociedad, Barcelona and Atlético. His stint with the Colchoneros was his most productive with 64 assists, followed by 16 with Real Sociedad and finally 12 in Barcelona.
Griezmann’s best season in the assists department was in the 2022-2023 season, where he led all of LaLiga with 17, surpassing Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, who finished the campaign with 10.
