Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement with Barcelona for Antoine Griezmann. The France international has signed a deal with the club until 2026. Griezmann has been one of his team’s best performers in recent matches.

The figures of the agreement signed between the club are as follows: Atlético will play the Catalan club 18 million euros plus 2 million in variables. Atlético will therefore halve the amount they were supposed to pay for the player at the end of the season.

Griezmann, 31, will sign for Atlético for three more seasons and could therefore retire from elite football in the Spanish capital. Atlético have done good business with the French striker. They signed him for the 2014-15 campaign, after winning LaLiga for the first time since 1996, from Real Sociedad. Atleti paid 30 million euros for a player who, at the age of 23, had already had some very impressive seasons with the Basque club.

Griezmann spent five seasons at Atlético and became the most outstanding player in Diego Simeone’s team. The Metropolitano outfit sold him to Barcelona for 120 million (Real Sociedad took 24 million). Atlético complained to Barcelona that they had been in contact with the player when he was still under contract with the Madrid club and secured another 15 million. It was sold as a right of first refusal for Barça over some of Atlético’s players, such as Saúl and Giménez, and some of the youth players of the future, such as Sergio Camello.

Atlético great

Atlético, after announcing Griezmann’s renewal, have secured the future of one of the best players in Atletico’s history for three more years. A World Cup winner with France, Griezmann has played 304 games for Atlético and scored 144 goals, 32 of them in Europe. He has won three titles (a Europa League, a European Super Cup and a Spanish Super Cup).

The Frenchman’s dream is to win a league title with the Madrid club. He is 30th on Atlético’s all-time list for most games played. He has started the season very well and has told everyone who would listen to him that he is delighted to be an Atlético player.
