Despite a slew of rumours linking Frenchman Antoine Griezmann with a summer move away from Atlético Madrid, with just a handful of days before the conclusion of the transfer window, it appears that the 33-year-old is destined to spend another season with the LaLiga club.

The arrival of both Alexander Sorloth and Julián Álvarez seemed to herald an exit for Griezmann with the French player stating on several occasions on how he would like to see out his playing time in MLS. However, the club’s all-time top scorer has shown already this season why he will prove to be a vital cog in Diego Simeone’s wheel as Atleti could be one of the sides to push Real Madrid all the way this season.

Griezmann scored his 182nd goal for the Rojiblancos on Sunday night with his effort his eighth from a direct free kick in the last 10 seasons. The goal propels the Frenchman onto the podium of most goals scored in LaLiga from direct free kicks in the past ten years with top spot still being held by Lionel Messi during his time at FC Barcelona.

Griezmann in the Top 3

Messi bagged 26 goals from free kicks in the past decade despite leaving the Catalan club in the summer of 2021. Villarreal’s Dani Parejo has bagged ten goals from frees with Griezmann breaking into the top three with his fine strike against Girona on Sunday.

Griezmann was pleased with the home debut and happy to have made the scoresheet stating post-game: “We were really looking forward to playing at home after such a long time as we missed our fans and the stadium”.
